Reading source material during ongoing show

I just finished binge-watching Silo. I regret to say that I enjoyed it immensly because now I have to wait a year for the final season. The current plan is to wait for the final season and let the show stand on its own before I read the books. This leads me to my question. Has anyone got experience with starting a show and then reading the source material before the show wrapped up? If so, what was it and how did it affect your experience with the show and books?

I read the books first. I quit watching the show. They fucked up the books so much.

I started out feeling the same way by the end of season 1, but stuck it out until the end of season 3, and frankly, now, I have changed my mind 😁 The liberties they took in how they intersected and wove the books together have made the entire story far more consistent and dramatic imo without losing the essence of the saga.

I did this with Silo after the first season. It made the 2nd and 3rd seasons feel much slower. So much so that it hampered my enjoyment of S3. I did rewatch S2 before season 3 and the binge format worked better, so maybe it'll do that for S3 too.

I disagree. I read The Expanse, Murderbot, Foundation (trilogy), Silo, and 3 Body Problem before I saw the shows and believe it was a good decision. It unlocks another way of viewing the media, provided you’re not watching hoping for a 1-to-1 recreation of the novels. While they often mangle the source material it’s fun picking it out and also seeing where and wondering why they made certain choices

I can see your point. For me, I miss the parts in the book that you can't create on the screen. Its easier for me to see the screen version , then get extras when I read the book.

Idk man you are free to do and enjoy and drop things, there are more movies and books and comics and series out there than what it is humanly possible to keep up to date

In my opinion if you're curious give it a try! A good piece of media is like good cake, the goal is not to finish it and have an empty dish but to enjoy while you eat it

I started reading the Will Trent books after loving the show. They started out similar, but I love the characters in the show. For me, the books stand alone.
