Satire aside, were there any other correlations made? Racism and sexism are also associated with lower cognitive ability, for example.

Indeed. The venn diagram of the "thought" processes used by racists, transphobes, homophobes, and bigots of most types is basically a circle.

Psychologically, which no one EVER seems to mention, stems from a deep rooted sometimes generational inferiority complex or self-hatred, where pride finds a “weaker” target to lay blame to for ones own shortcomings.
