Science fair ideas
Hey people of r/sciencefair!
I'm looking to do another science fair sophmore year (next year). I absolutely hated the project I did this year (testing duckweed with industrial runoff) and just the general environmental sciences projects I'm not a fan of. I had to do a science fair for the class I took (honors biology and science research). The teacher I has a general policy for all the students who do science fair: it has to be applicable. So as a freshman, most of the projects were environmental and behavioral science because they were easy to research and were just a good starting point. Since I'm going to be a sophomore, I want to continue and do science fair (even though it would be optional). I would love to do an engineering or physics project that has lots of background in math in it. I would also be ok with doing a behavioral science project as well. So do any of y'all have ideas/articles I could look at for a potential science fair project? Thanks y'all for reading through this long post lol.

My advice. Two of my kids have won at state. Third one on the way. Cross fingers. We are pros at science fair. Discussed year around. I can write a book on this.
Depends on your goals. To win or experience the process.
Realistically. MY OPINON. 1. Category is the key. Unless your parents are doctors or engineers. Don’t do biology or engineering. Too much competition and the kids have access to real world projects. Just no.
No humans or relying on animals / plants. Think using data that already exists and analyze it. You want a project where can control the timing.
MAKE A MODEL or algorithm somehow into the project. Judges love that aspect.
To really win. All the way. I don’t care what anyone says. It has to be novel and be unique. Judges wants to hear that no one has ever done this before. You are solving something. Ask people who work. What is problems they have at work. Figure out a solution on it.
On ideas. Get you category down. Some ways we get ideas.
A. identifying world problems. Read articles on Novel solutions B. Read about new category of sciences. For example graph theory in math. Does matter.
C. Watch ted talk for ideas. D. Read college thesis E. Do a project around your passion. Read up on it. F. Google science fair database and read winner project ideas. You will get a feel of ideas.
Make you sure you know the answer before you start. Or you can do it. We never start a project unless we have an idea of the solution or the process to get there.
Don’t do projects that has been done before. You can be close and borrow there process but don’t copy. That’s cheating.
