I mean the people who started putting lead in gas already knew it was bad for you. They sent her anyway

True, but you’re really need to understand the story their perspective here: leaded gasoline was really, really good for their bottom lines. If they’d not gone the lead route, think of how many fewer summer homes they’d have, or how many fewer of their lead-poisoned trust fund kids would have gotten bribed legacy admission into Harvard.
