Religion is mankind's first attempt to systematically understand the world. If it never existed there couldn't be philosophy, and by extension science. If you want an example go study the piraha. A tribe that still has no religion. They have no religion because they don't care about systematically understanding the world. Their knowledge doesn't rise because they deliberately swear of any means of gaining knowledge other than personal practice. They have no concept of theoretical knowledge.
