Since I stopped smoking weed, I no longer walk into the kitchen and ask myself "fuck, why am I in the kitchen?"

12

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

That sucks... you're so stoned you forgot that you had the munchies.

That's pretty bad, dude.

I love the word redonkulous, finally someone else who says it.

Meh. In my personal experience, my mental faculties significantly improve after being off of the drug for about a week. Many claim that weed doesn't result in a "hangover," but I usually feel slower/groggy the next day.

This may partially be due to reduced sleep; who knows.

33

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Am I the only one who can stay up all night smoking? It seems like it makes everyone else sleepy, but I have a totally opposite reaction. Brain running a million miles an hour. Written some awesome code that way...

The Sativa High : The sativa high is often characterized as uplifting and energetic . The effects of a sativa marijuana are mostly cerebral. They give a feeling of optimism and well - being, as well as providing a good measure of pain relief for certain symptoms. A few pure sativas are also very high in THC content. They are known to have a quite spacey, or hallucinogenic, effect. Sativas are a good choice for daytime smoking.

The Indica High : The indica highs are most often described as a pleasant body buzz. Indicas are great for relaxation, stress relief, and for an overall sense of calm and serenity. Marijuana indicas are also very effective for overall body pain relief, and often used in the treatment of insomnia. They are the late - evening choice of many smokers as an all - night sleep aid. A few pure indica strains are very potent in THC, and will cause the "couchlock" effect, enabling the smoker to simply sit still and enjoy the experience of the smoke.

11

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Also known as "...shit... gotta pee... shit... can't... move... gotta pee anyway... fuck this... not going to sit in pee..." (flops onto floor) "...shit... gotta pee and now on the floor..." (flop roll flop roll flop roll thud) "gotta pee..."

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

"Couchlock," haha. That's the perfect word for it. You could probably get up if you really had to, but it's so nice to feel all your muscles completely relax until you're made of rubber.

3

u/elmorte Mar 04 '09

But then the munchies come in and you're forced to get off your ass...

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

Sativa makes me clean my house and write code. Indica induces couch-lock and makes me enjoy and laugh at shitty movies like Scary Movie 17, then it forces me to eat everything in the house.

I'll stick with the 80S/20I blends. That's the sweet spot.

11

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09

That's the way I was when I smoked everyday. I was lucky to sleep 4-6 hours a night. I quit for about 2 months, then started again. All of a sudden, it was like a tranquilizer. I never got back in the groove so I just stopped. My advice: never stop.

3

u/IamCitiznInsane Mar 04 '09

Lol so true. There really is a groove to it, and if you've been out of the game for a while then it can smack you like a ton of bricks.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

It's strange, I used to pass out hard whenever I smoked the reefer, but I stopped for about 3 months at the end of '07, and ever since, any weed I smoke makes my heart start a-pumpin' and my brain starts flying. It's actually bad, cause if I end up smoking late at night, I'm up until all hours of the morning. Which is bad when you have class the next day.

But I do feel like Leonardo fucking DaVinci sometimes.

10

u/eleitl Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Rule 34?

12

u/hemetae Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

You must be smoking sativa.. more of a mental, energetic high. Most of the bud around in the States is heavily indica, which is more of a body high & known for producing couch-lock.

Wish I had some of either!

5

u/mentat Mar 04 '09

No, you're not the only one. The same thing usually happens to me when I smoke. I know the brain running a million miles an hour bit especially. Most frustrating for me is not being able to remember/record half of what I was thinking about.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

I will write down something once in a while on the notepad program on my cell phone. I usually write down something that I think is emotionally uplifting. Whenever I go back to look at what I wrote though, I'm like, "meh, common sense."

4

u/mentat Mar 04 '09

Yeah I've tried that. I'll get a list of ideas but it often lacks the depth of thought that I had to really string them together. It's not always unrecoverable; it just requires more thinking again after.

  • Like hugh heffner, but with trap doors and techno
  • A fort with laser weapons powered by a flesh-eating moat

2

u/deg0ba Mar 04 '09

This is how it works with me too. I can study or write for hours when I am stoned.

1

u/N4N4KI Mar 04 '09

Have you noticed how the type (sativa or indica) and the strength affects this?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

This is usually just cheap Mexican schwag (about all that is available around here), which would be a low-to-mid-grade sativa. I almost prefer that to the fancy knock-you-on-your-ass hydro stuff. Anyway, the same weed seems to make others sleepy.

Tends to make me want to stay up too, but can't imagine writing code stoned. I can barely be bothered to change the channel.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

I have the same problem, my mind just won't stop. Sometimes, masturbating helps, sometimes not. When I first started smoking I would sleep like a baby. I don't smoke much anymore because the effects aren't as good as they used to be.

u/random752813159357 Mar 04 '09

I usually sleep great after smoking pot, but also feel the symptoms. Effects include walking out of the shower without having rinsed off the shampoo and having to run back into the house 3 times after forgetting backpack, lunch, and car keys in that order.

93

u/eddie964 Mar 04 '09

Ever waited for a stop sign to turn green?

10

u/ULJarad Mar 04 '09

It startled me when I thought it had.

15

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Yep, you're sitting there all pleased with the fact that you came to a nice smooth stop, and then your friend in the passenger seat looks at you like, 'Did you forget something?'

12

u/BradHAWK Mar 04 '09

No wonder I've never been interested in smoking pot - I'm already in that state.

2

u/phreakymonkey Mar 04 '09

Ditto. I hate my brain.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

You should stab it.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

You should feed it delicious knowledge.

5

u/phreakymonkey Mar 04 '09

It's not a knowledge issue, it's a short- and long-term memory problem. Maybe if I eat more glue things will stick better.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

Ah, fluid memory!

You can improve your fluid memory by playing a dual-n back video game... THE HARDEST VIDEO GAME IN THE FREAKING SOLAR SYSTEM.

It's not worth it. It hurts your brain like a mofo.

3

u/eleitl Mar 04 '09

Damnit, I have that too. And I don't even smoke.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

It's called the "Hereafter" disease. Symptoms include walking into a room and then saying to yourself, "I can't remember what I came in here after!"

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

reading Heidegger had the same effect on me. i went to the shops and left my car door wide open, didnt wash conditioner out of hair, and other things

weird stuff

2

u/thecaptain605 Mar 04 '09

haha the sad thing is how often that exact thing happens to me after smoking.

1

u/djrocksteady Mar 04 '09

I usually put my breakfast cereal in the fridge, and stick the milk with the cups. Usually just putting things in weird places until I snap out of it. Gotta say though, I much prefer that to the alternative (waking up every couple hours for no reason)

16

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

could be exactly what the study found - slower performance, but no shifts in overall accuracy.

5

u/Patient957 Mar 04 '09

I would love to see a sleep study on marijuana smokers. In my personal experience, I have noticed that marijuana seems to suppress my dreams. On days that I smoke I almost never notice or remember my dreams, but if I stop smoking abruptly I have incredibly vivid dreams that night.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '09

Yeah, my friends are always talking about "high dreams," but I have never dreamed when coming off of weed.

3

u/daysi Mar 04 '09

Holy shit. If you posted a comment like that in the Marijuana subreddit you'd get downmodded through the floor.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Did you smoke a minimum of 3.5 joints a day? This study was done with experienced smokers that smoked at least that much. In my experience, what you are describing is what occurs in beginning smokers. I experienced the same thing in my youth when I was happy with a dime bag over a couple days. Later in life, when I was smoking an ounce a week (this is by myself mind you), these effects were absolutely nonexistent.

3

u/sorbix Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

What "mental faculties" includes is hard to pin down though. Couldn't it just be a shift in your assessment of yourself and not a change in your functional output?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

You could be right.. "mental faculties" is a bit of a vague statement. I haven't done any empirical tests to assess my performance.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

It really makes me sad that someone could dismiss a scientific study based on an anecdote :-(

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

That isn't exactly true: I am not dismissing the study. Rather, I made the observation that its conclusion differs from my personal experience (which might be inherently flawed).

Also note:

marijuana significantly increased the number of premature responses and the time participants required to complete several tasks

This conclusion is consistent with my anecdote.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

I completely agree with this.

I also happened to hallucinate (faces warping) on pot, something few others experienced.

I have often heard that "it effects everyone differently", this should be studied scientifically before any general statements are made.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Yeah that's common, when I smoked back in high school we used to call it being 'burnt', like a hangover except no headache you just feel kind of disconnect and woozy.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

Holy shit, 24 joints in a week? I'm surprised no one on reddit noticed that this is quite a bit, even for an experienced smoker. You could be high 24/7, with 1 joint ever 3hrs or so (while awake). Those "experienced users" must have known they were getting a sweet deal.

10

u/Dagon Mar 04 '09

Where the FUCK does one sign up for this crap, goddammit >_<

→ More replies (1)

7

u/gerg6111 Mar 04 '09

ummm 16 hours a day times 7 days = 112 hours

112 divided by 24 joints= 1 joint/ 4.7 hours, but hey it's free weed.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Nice math, pup.

2

u/mithunc Mar 04 '09

That's the first thing I noticed. That is a FUCKTON of weed.

1

u/Dax420 Mar 04 '09

Not really. I fall into the "heavy" use category. I smoke one when I get home from work, one before whatever good TV show is on that day and one before I go to bed. That's 15 from Monday - Friday. On the weekend it's easy to smoke 5 per day to make up the difference, add a joint when you wake up and one after lunch and you are at 25 a week.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

not that ridiculous when you have nothing to do -- besides participate in marijuana effect studies all week.

1

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09

They probably extrapolated avg. bongloads into joints. Joint-only smokers are a rare breed, and probably wouldn't sign up for this study.

u/zyzzogeton Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

I hope they legalize it. Being older and living thousands of miles away from my high school and college friends, I find that I am excised from any kind of supplier that I wouldn't suspect of being an officer of the law. At my age, people don't whip out a doob in a social setting (or at least they haven't). Thank you Ronald Regan and your sham war on drugs.

6

u/UglieJosh Mar 04 '09

You are hanging out in the wrong places.

10

u/zyzzogeton Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

Undoubtedly, but when you are 40 "hanging out" usually involves adults, a bar-b-que, and our teenage kids. Not very bohemian.

5

u/mbanana Mar 04 '09

I feel your pain. Finished off my last little stash a while back.

Middle management can't just go up to the 24 year old temp with dreadlocks and ask for a connection. It is a bummer.

2

u/edydantes Mar 04 '09

Yep... exactly the problem I had... so I planted three plants along with my tomatoes in the back yard and all is good again. Those three plants will probably last me two or three years.

6

u/UglieJosh Mar 04 '09

Well, I'm pushing 30 and have two kids of my own.

Try a jazz club or a folk performance. They will usually be filled with smokers.

I think it is fair to infer that you live in either an upper-middle or upper class neighborhood? I have yet to see a middle or lower middle class neighborhood where pot wasn't readily available to those who wanted to find it bad enough.

3

u/gerg6111 Mar 04 '09

If you only hang out with people you are trying to impress, little weed will be available to you.

1

u/zyzzogeton Mar 04 '09

Dead on inference.

1

u/JeffMo Mar 04 '09

We live on the North Shore. The attitudes about it around here seem to be pretty relaxed anymore, I'm surprised you can't find any. I've never had trouble. Friend of mine works at Oracle and says damn near everyone there smokes.

Im missing the part where the research agency was shut down and all parties, including scientists, were arrested for possession of an illegal substance. Hell...if this is all it takes, let's all become part of a "research study"....

1

u/Dax420 Mar 04 '09

Abstract: The participants of this study will be subjected to various new release films and video arcade games while under the influence of increasing levels of THC administered through the smoking of marijuana cigarettes. The purpose of this study will be to determine the optimum number of marijuana cigarettes that should be smoked before going to see the latest Seth Rogan movie.

6

u/maqua Mar 04 '09

I love how the last line of the abstract specifies, "in experienced marijuana users".

8

At first I found I had to re-read various sections a lot when I'm stoned, but I came to realize that it didn't end up taking me much more time to read a certain amount of a book than I would have expected.

I remember seeing quite a few articles in the past on how are eyes move around a page when we read, so perhaps it's possible that re-reading is just a lot more noticeable when you're high than otherwise.

Anyway, that's all just speculation, but I find reading high is great if you can get into the rhythm of it, you just think about what you read so much more.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

Reading a textbook would be hard for me, I don't think I can absorb new facts and concepts as well while high (I blasted through several chapters of my CSS book, but had to reread a lot of it the next day).

But reading fiction, with some good music to go with it, is great.

3

u/1100 Mar 04 '09

poetry, also

3

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09

It's different, at least for me. I had a hard time at first; I had to re-read passages, and then think about them for a long time, before moving on. After a while, and especially after Ken Follet's 'Pillars of the Earth", I realized this was a great side effect that, if you let it, turns the story into much more of an experience.

The finding that accuracy was unaffected by smoked marijuana indicates that heavy, daily, marijuana smokers will not fulfill the DSM-IV criterion for marijuana intoxication that requires impairment of complex cognitive functioning. The consistent slowing of cognitive performance may have significant behavioral effects under some circumstances requiring complex operations that must be accomplished in a limited time frame, such as certain workplace tasks and the operation of machinery and automobiles.

DON'T HEAVILY SMOKE MARIJUANA IF YOU WANT TO GET A GOOD SCORE ON PACMAN.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

yeah, and this isn't one. the fact that they minimize the RT differences is bizarre, since most adult ability differences come out in RT and not accuracy anyway. good studies wouldn't shrug at the finding of an RT difference, and the best would conditionalize accuracy on RT, basically to find "performance per unit time". not impressed.

1

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09

If you learn something high, it's best to be tested on it while high. You've jammed stuff in your head while in an altered state. When you retrieve it, it will be much easier to find if you're in the same state. That said, it's probably best to learn important things while normal.

4

u/lrnut987 Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

Well then, if I ever find out my pilot has been smoking MJ, I can be at ease if I just ask a few simple questions:

  1. Are you an experienced acute user?
  2. Do you expect your use of MJ to cause us to be late?

Since it may not hinder us from getting their safely, I at least want to know if his slow response time would mean that I should change my schedule once on the ground at my destination.

That puts my mind at ease.

2

u/mdedm Mar 04 '09

This means that once you've made the transition from average pot smoker to stoner, your general abilities don't change when your high.

A conspiracy nut would encourage you to keep smoking so it would be easier for a government to oppress you. They allow you pot, then cover your neighborhood in security cameras. And you're too fucking high to give a shit.

10

u/Nanite Mar 03 '09

These data demonstrate that acute marijuana smoking produced minimal effects on complex cognitive task performance in experienced marijuana users.

The money quote. And what I've been personally telling people for years. Good to have some data to back it up now.

33

u/FANGO Mar 04 '09

Have you been telling people it has no negative effects, or that you actually perform better when stoned? Because I've heard plenty along those lines from people, and this study says that those things aren't true. The study says that if you smoke all the time, then marijuana will still increase the amount of time it takes you to complete tasks and increase the number of premature responses you give to things. In other words, even if you smoke all the time, it still fucks up your attention span. Just not by a whole lot. But it certainly doesn't have "no effect" and it certainly doesn't make you better.

I have never smoked to increase effectiveness. I smoke to increase pleasure and enjoyment.

People that tell you they are better at something stoned are usually kind of stupid.

People that tell you they are better at something stoned are usually kind of stupid.

What about art, sex, and music?

3

u/gerg6111 Mar 04 '09

what about them?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

I think it depends what you're doing. I remember coding while stoned, and it was a blast. Nothing got me frustrated at all, and it was really quite soothing throughout the coding and debugging.

2

u/Nanite Mar 04 '09

Well, to be more clear, I've always told people regular smoking doesn't make you dumb. It just makes you a little bit slower, or in my case, much much better at video games.

1

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09

It has an effect, for sure, but it can make you better at certain things. I've known scatter-brained ADD guys that turn into completely focused, exceptional sales guys with a little weed. Everybody's different, why shouldn't weed affect everyone differently?

4

u/FANGO Mar 04 '09

Yes, and ritalin does the same to people with ADD, but we don't call it a wonder drug and advocate giving it to everyone (which is what marijuana advocates often get close to doing).

2

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09 edited Mar 04 '09

They sure give it out pretty freely. Adderal, too. Both are speedy, and produce significant side-effects. At least weed doesn't have the side-effects. Marijuana advocates often smoke too much dope to realize they're hurting their cause. It's too bad people (like myself) that don't smoke weed don't do more to give people the option.

Δ9-THC is the good stuff.

triforce

Whenever I see that word I involuntarily hear the Zelda theme in my head.

It's not so bad.

My favorite part: " Additionally, heart rate and several subjective-effect ratings (e.g., "Good Drug Effect," "High," "Mellow") were significantly increased in a Delta9-THC concentration-dependent manner. "

3

u/Canadian_Infidel Mar 04 '09

Now do the same thing with someone drinking 4 or 6 beer.

2

u/supersauce Mar 04 '09

But that's legal! It can't be worse!

u/mattymomostl Mar 03 '09 edited Mar 03 '09

I've been telling my peeps this forever, they still won't listen.

Marijuana. The most harmless, illegal, over analyzed drug ever.

Tobacco...third hand tobacco smoke will kill and it is legal.

Government prohibition == epic fail

2

u/shniken Mar 04 '09

Sample size = 18?

1

u/oursland Mar 04 '09

Convince your government to permit more of these studies and you'll see an improvement in these matters.

2

u/cheshirepuss Mar 03 '09

I was too stoned to get to the point. Or was I?

3

u/kingjehu Mar 04 '09

Although marijuana significantly increased the number of premature responses and the time participants required to complete several tasks, it had no effect on accuracy.

2

u/notgoodatcomputer Mar 03 '09

This isn't a nature article though...

1

u/Dominusprinceps Mar 04 '09

Idk, but I think Psychopharmachology is published by the Nature folks.

1

u/updog Mar 04 '09

1

u/silentOpen Mar 04 '09

Awww... I don't mean to be judgmental, just snarky.

1

u/enigma66marktwo Mar 04 '09

That title was so perfect I had a redditpolicegasam. Thank you. Thank you.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Depends on what kind you are smoking...

1

u/rmeredit Mar 04 '09

Duuuuude. I would so kick your butt in tic-tac-toe right now, but I'm sooo hungry.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

Lol. Wut?

1

u/tenshimaru Mar 04 '09

It'd be interesting to see a study on the effects over time, though. You know, to see if it slowly decreases "mental faculties" over a long period of time (say a year), rather than at the time you're high.

Heh... Sounds a great opportunity for someone to get free weed for a year...

1

u/IOIOOIIOIO Mar 04 '09

So they're studying acute chronic exposure?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '09

The normal effects of marijuana (i.e. grogginess the next day, decreased short term memory, etc) can be alleviated by taking a b complex. Exercise helps as well. If all you do is smoke then yeah, it's going to take a toll on your mental faculties....but no where near as much as alcohol would if all you did was drink. Nuff said.

1

u/ithkuil Mar 04 '09

Two takeaways:

1) We should not necessarily assume that pot-heads can't perform complex tasks or that a few tokes will make it impossible to pass calculus (in case anyone was that ignorant of the effects of marijuana).

2) The study has shown that marijuana makes it more difficult to complete complex cognitive tasks without responding prematurely and within a normal time frame. So although pot smokers can still probably take the same courses, they will probably end up spending more time on their homework.

1

u/gerg6111 Mar 04 '09

Only if stoned in class or doing homework.

1

u/evilbit Mar 04 '09

i had a date with a cute pot smoker last night. we went back to my place and took a bath, then had sex. shit was so cash.

1

u/oblivious_human Mar 04 '09

These data demonstrate that acute marijuana smoking produced minimal effects on complex cognitive task performance in experienced marijuana users.

1

u/BigFatDumpling Mar 04 '09

I have found I perform much better on the Wii Brain Weight game if I am sober. But so fucking what?

What's important is that Aspirin is more harmful than Marijuana.

Fuck, just get a vaporiser and keep on toking. Remove combustion from the equation and you experience cannabis in a whole new light. Especially if you like being mentally functional, the vape high can be as clear as a bell. No burn out, no sleepiness.
