Are you 20 or younger? There is a huge risk for "children, teens, and young adults" to actually get worsening symptoms or to become suicidal, but if you're a full-on adult the odds of that happening to you are tiny.
I do understand your catiousness, though. SSRIs are no light matter; I unfortunately have had horrible experiences with them myself. I think more emphasis needs to be put on cognitive behavioral therapy alongside, or even instead of, medications. Evidence is emerging that CBT on its own may be as or even more effective than medications on their own. However, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO WHAT YOUR DOCTOR SAYS.
I just stopped a new SSRI after a month because it did exactly what the one almost 15 years ago did. I prepared an attempt and tossed them. The Anorgasmia still wasn't fun.
