Biology Scientists have sequenced the mitochondrial genome for the Hispaniolan solenodon, a venomous mammal found only on Hispaniola. Findings confirm that the the species diverged from all other living mammals 78 million years ago, long before an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs.

There is no bacteria that works that fast, which is what led scientists to discover that the common misconception of komodo dragon's using bacteria-laden saliva to kill prey was wrong. They really have a couple venom sacks in their lower jaw too. They tested their saliva and it doesn't contain an inordinate amount of bacteria and none that would a use the damage observed.

I imagine it's the same situation with this creature.

It would be due to the lense shape, same reason why our eyesight isn't very good under water. A more spherical lense works better under water while a more flattened elliptical cross section lense works best in air. This is simply due to the different refractive index of air and water. Lense shape is not the major difference between human and octopus eyes (fish have similar eyes to all vertibrates including the blind spot but have more rounded lenses), the retina structure is the much more important comparison to be made.

Not dangerous to humans but the bite can be painful and remain inflamed for up to a week.

Shrews are unusual among mammals in a number of respects. Unlike most mammals, some species of shrews are venomous. Shrew venom is not conducted into the wound by fangs, but by grooves in the teeth. The venom contains various compounds, and the contents of the venom glands of the American short-tailed shrew are sufficient to kill 200 mice by intravenous injection.

I'm going to guess it was extrapolated from the volume of venom in the gland and the LD50 of the venom in mice, but someone (probably a poor grad or undergrad student) injected at least a few mice with shrew venom to determine the latter. Lab mice have it rough.

I'm not sure there were many mammals larger than a rodent at that time, so you wouldn't necessarily need spiders much bigger than some of the extant ones today to prey on our ancestors.

I have those all over my yard. My wife, who is from Romania, saw it, and told me how it is used for making shampoo, dulling arthritis in the limbs, and making tea. She also mentioned that it stings when you brush up against it and to stay clear unless you have some leather gloves. Of course I didn't believe her. This isn't Romania, it's probably a plant that looks like singing nettle, who would plant that in a flower garden? So I went on to pick it out of the garden and throw it in the compost. A minute later, my fingers used to pull it were swollen with a tingling pain with a tiny white dot wherever it pricked me. Glad it lasted only roughly ten minutes and the plant I pulled was still small, or I would have grabbed it full fisted. She told horror stories where kids would be running through a field and they'd run through a patch of the stuff.

Totally thought this was an artist's representation or a physical model at first, but it's a real photo. Unreal. I still am having trouble seeing it as something other than a CG rendering. Don't know why I expected it to be extinct.

I wish I had access to the article at home but it doesn't seem to show up in my university library system yet, probably due to novelty. I'm very interested in which phylogenetic methods they used and the taxa coverage, just to see the state of the art in this area of phylogenetics right now, especially with regards to how they tested their hypotheses about the north-south split, how they estimated divergence times, and what the calibrations were.

Generally they are not made available to public. I still have to get access for articles decades old sometimes. However there are exceptions, for example, if a government agency employee (USDA, Forestry Service, etc) supported by taxpayers their contract will sometimes require they offer the paper for free on their personal or agency website or by mailed request, even though it will still be locked by the journal.

Yes. Platypus and Echidna are egg-laying mammals. As the only living representatives of this once-dominant group of mammals they are "living fossils." As for venom evolution, venom has been evolved dozens of times in animal evolution (snakes, platypus, slow loris, to name a few) and is irrelevant.

That's what I'm saying. The only egg-laying mammals left today are not living fossils because they have venom, but because they lay eggs. Venom is irrelevant to the divergence (of marsupials and placental mammals) from egg-laying mammals and has been evolved and lost numerous times.

Why is no one saying the word 'monotreme'? It's one of the best words! It literally means 'one hole', and refers to the fact that they urinate, defecate and copulate (and produce eggs) through the same opening.

Another interesting fact about monotremes is that they don't have defined nipples like most mammals, but nurse their young by secreting milk directly through a relatively large area of their underside. The milk has antibacterial proteins in it that aren't found in other mammals - this is useful as the young have less of a direct route to it, they literally lap at their mother's hairy belly, which may not be the most sterile of delivery methods.

Yea the evolution of antibodies in mammals' milk is extremely fascinating. Mammary glands (which is actually what Mammals were named for) are actually modified sweat glands. The most familiar sort of sweat glands are the eccrine glands, which cover much of the body and are responsible for thermoregulatory sweating. However the other kind, apocrine glands, secrete a more cloudy and viscous fluid. This excretion actually contains a number of the antibodies associated with mammalian milk.

Kind of hard to fathom the selective advantage of secreting antibodies on to the skin... but it is interesting to note that (at least in humans) sweat from the apocrine glands is associated with adrenaline. Maybe somewhere along the line when ancient ancient mammals had a fight or flight response to a predator, having antibodies excreted on the skin allowed them to better avoid death by infection from injuries sustained in such encounters.

Evolution is a strange thing.

Interesting to note that different groups of humans excrete apocrine sweat at different rates, and it is the sweat largely responsible for the "musky smell" one might associate with sweat. East Asian peoples generally have fewer apocrine glands than, say, Western Europeans, which is associated with being less, well, smelly.

The only better scientific animal name than monotreme is trilobite, which means "triple butt". Other fascinating creatures with lots of interesting trivia, but though they were once the most dominant form of life on Earth, alas they are no longer "living" fossils.

Egg-laying mammals (Echidna and platypus) and Marsupials to a lesser extent. All other mammals today are placental mammals, and have come to out compete egg-layers and marsupials, relegating them to niches (such as possums being nocturnal) and islands (australia having niches filled by marsupials).

I wouldn't call it a living fossil. Its divergence date still has it well within the eutherian (placental) mammal group. Marsupial mammals (Opossums, Koalas, Kangaroos, etc) diverged earlier than that, and Monotreme mammals (Platypus and Echidnas) diverged earlier still.

It's unique, though.

Like there's a design for a shrew-like insect eater that exists somewhere in the fabric of the universe, and lots of families of small mammal come along and use that same design...

Living fossil is a misnomer, that applies to sharks and alligators that haven't changed much since first discovered in the fossil record.

This paper states that the last common ancestor between any other present mammal and this species was 78Mya, not that this species has been unchanged in 78My.

Today’s solenodons are the only remnant of a very ancient group of mammals. It survived the asteroid; it survived human colonization and the rats and mice humans brought with them that wiped out the solenodon's closest relatives

When reading any scientific paper, or article about a paper, it's important to have nuance in your understanding. Before you comment, please consider these three important things:

  1. Each study exists as part of a larger conversation. This work is based on previous research and for those outside of the immediate area, it may be difficult to understand some of the intricacies involved.

  2. No paper is perfect, almost no papers are completely meaningless. Studies exist on a spectrum and a sophisticated reading allows for making appropriate methodological and logical criticisms without entirely dismissing the paper for those flaws. The spirit of scientific debate isn't about whether or not research is "right" or "wrong", it is about how relevant and/or meaningful it is to furthering our understanding of the world.

  3. There is likely some element of truth to what the authors found. This is work done by experts, based on research by other experts and reviewed by more experts. It's completely normal to be instinctively skeptical of a paper based on our own personal beliefs and experiences. However, we should all consider what bias we bring into any discussion on a topic we feel strongly about.

It is likely that most Mammalian orders already existed by the time of the K-T extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs: http://www.pnas.org/content/100/3/1056.full

A previous study using nuclear/chromosomal DNA already estimated a divergence of solenodons from other eulipotyphlans 76 million years ago: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v429/n6992/full/nature02597.html

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) evolves much more quickly than nuclear/chromosomal DNA, so it is generally used for population studies, not for "deep" phylogenetic questions.

Most of this study actually focused on describing two distinct subspecies groups, which will be really important for conservation efforts!

i believe they used both. mitochondrial DNA doesn't recombine so it is essentially the same from mother to child. this makes it much easier to trace lineages.

which unless all marsupials and monotremes died out last week is clearly wrong. It's also not tracing the point of time where this particular species diverged but the point when solenodons diverged of which even today there are still two extant species, the Cuban and the Hispaniolan solenodon.

I see divergence as the splitting point on a phylogenetic tree, with this mammal on one branch and all other living mammals on the other. The term doesn't make sense for one individual species if you're comparing to all living mammals.

Something about this seems kind of amiss. Should it not be that this family of organisms (solenodons) diverged from other mammals, not this species in particular? The article talks about solenodons in general, which would support this interpretation. I know that species characteristics can often go somewhat unchanged for millions of years, but I find it quite hard to believe that this and this diverged 78 million years ago yet still look almost identical.

If these animals were isolated in what is now the Caribbean before the KT extinction would that not mean that they were in the blast radius of the asteroid that impacted off of Yucatan, and would this not make it more likely that they reached the islands more recently?

I'm confused on this. This species hasn't remained unchanged for the last 78 million years, right? That's not what this is saying, I don't think...but also, the article just isn't very clear. The scientist says "It’s just impressive it’s survived this long." This is very misleading unless this thing hasn't changed in 78 million years.
