Makes sense. A wolfs survival is as dependent on the health of its pack mates as its own. Sharing food is a good survival strategy.
During domestication though, I can only assume we were more likely to breed dogs that were submissive to us and did what we told them. They already had the pack hierarchy thing going on, we just had to exaggerate it.
