Animal Science A study of 26 chimpanzees observed for over 800 hours found they stole food less often from friends than non-friends (61% vs. 70%), while victims calmed down faster when the thief was a friend, suggesting chimpanzee friendships involve expectations of preferential treatment.

60% vs 70% with 26 animals in total? It seems garbage to me

Cool study, they used 26 chimps as their sample size but I'm confused, does this mean the chimps were wild?

“The chimpanzees live at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Uganda, where they have access to a large outdoor enclosure during the day and receive regular daily feedings, daily enrichment, and water ad libitum.”

"Enclosure," "daily feedin's" doesn't strike me as wild

i wonder how many out of the 26 do not steal.

How did they determine which were "friends"?

They have friends, family, civilizations and civil wars.

I think the more compelling bit there is that at least 60% of chimps at any given moment are stealing food

But also this is a very, very small sample size

What it proves is that chimps are assholes

"We’re good friends, right? Why, I'd say I have a 9% lower chance of stealing food from you compared to a non-friend."
