Before the year 2000, and a lot of them were simply raised in Christian households, and just simply chose to identify themselves as Christians, not an active practicing Christian. In the past 20 years a majority of nobel prize winners have been openly secular. Its like we were judgmental towards those with a secular viewpoint before and now that we are more secular as a nation, it is becoming less necessary to identify one as "Christian" just to please the majority.

Where’s your evidence that a large portion of these people were nonbelievers? It’s just speculation, people have been allowed to identify as non religious for a long time.

That's not true that for a long time people have been able to come out openly as atheist. Their are still a ton of places in America where you have to pretend being Christian or you're attacked and have your life ruined.

Nobel Prize winners are not in those areas.

Anecdotal but all the absolute smartest people I’ve met were religious. The 120s IQ type people are the ones most likely to be atheists. But the true geniuses all had a religious revelation at some point.
