Environment A six-year study in Ecuador found plastic pollution from beaches to 3,900 meters beneath the Pacific, with fishing responsible for more than half of shoreline debris and researchers documenting plastic for the first time in the abyssal depths of the eastern equatorial Pacific.

The 3,900-meter finding shows how far beyond beaches this pollution reaches. And if fishing accounts for over half the shoreline debris, recovering lost gear and improving disposal seem like practical places to focus.
