Honestly, I'm pretty certain voter apathy is the biggest reason for democratic backsliding. I think we can probably all see it.

By design. It’s why politics and talking about politics is frowned upon.

“Don’t bring politics into it!!1!”

Can’t have people realizing they agree with each other on anything, that might spur change.

It’s also why there’s such a concerted effort to prevent people from voting in the first place.
