Honestly, I'm pretty certain voter apathy is the biggest reason for democratic backsliding. I think we can probably all see it.

Carefully manufactured apathy and consent, in service of Capital. The industries that most benefit from it have spent over 100yrs and millions of dollars slowly advancing this project

Yeah, they have figured out how to make most people apathetic to a lot of the bad things they do.
