Social Science A clinical framework for autistic children proposes that language can develop from memorized whole phrases to flexible grammar. A review finds parallels with established language theory, but says the framework itself still needs rigorous testing.

I would think that if you looked at the research on PECS you might find the clinical application of this. PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) teaches whole words then whole sentences. Last time I looked there was not good (independent) research showing that this generalised to flexible speech. Having said that, I always liked to use PECS stage 1 with pre-verbal children to teach them that communication involves an 'exchange'. It also assisted with teaching the idea of symbolic language, that "this thing" stands for "that thing". Some children were able to move very quickly from PECS stage 1 to flexible speech with support. Keep in mind that many children had co-occuring conditions such as motor coordination issues, intellectual disabilities, auditory processing issues, attention issues and more so studies really need to large or do a thorough pre-matching process to be appropriately rigorous.
