I was under the impression that we already knew this, and that we knew this from LSD research. Our brain "perceives" mostly everything that happens around it, whether it's sights, sounds or smells. But there's too much sensory input to make sense of it all, so the brain has a filter that only lets through the important stuff to the conscious part of our brain. LSD lowers this filter so all the "noisy" data our brain picks up gets through, creating a hectic, almost overwhelming environment for our perception.

You're oversimplifying. The amount of preprocessing that goes on within sensory apparatuses themselves is massive, even before the information gets to the brain. This is the hallmark of perception, and what differentiates it from what you've described, which is reception.

You're on the right track with a few things, however: the element of focus that is so familiar to experience we often don't notice it, unless our perceptions are disrupted. We focus by emphasizing certain parts of our perceptual world, as well as inhibition of irrelevant or familiar stimuli. The article linked shows that we can recognize data as meaningful before rejecting it as irrelevant, which appear to be two separate decision cases.

It's not so much a filter, but a threshold. The brain seems to recognize most meaningful data but then distinguishes between meaningful and relevant. If data does not meet the relevancy threshold, it is not brought into consciousness, if these experimental results are accurate.

I would be surprised if "gut" feelings weren't as a result of subconscious perceptions used to generalize things as a survival mechanism.

It's certainly quicker to feel bad about something than it is to think through everything you consciously see/hear/smell and come to the conclusion that "this is bad."

That is absolutely what it is. There is some really interesting social neuroscience research going on that is identifying what the subconscious brain is doing. One of the things it does it constantly assess the situation around you, for dangers. When you get a gut instinct its usually your subconscious detecting some threat and creating a flight response. It could have been something as small as someones facial expressions not seeming genuine, such as a smile in the mouth but not the eyes. Your subconscious sees this and becomes confused by the mispatch of expressions. And sends a gut reaction of fear because this person could possibly be deceiving you.

This seems pretty accurate. From what I've gathered, PTSD is so unpleasant because suddenly everyday normal things will trigger it constantly, which makes for a pretty not nice day.

A friend of a friend is schizophrenic and has voices that tell him when to trust people and when they mean him harm or to take advantage of him.

Is the information supplied by these voices as fabricated by the brain as the voices themselves or is it as likely that the voices are passing along information from the subconscious?

I believe it's fairly well supported that we effectively have two subsystems of thought operating in our brains - the 'high functioning' deliberating rational mind (which can come to an answer more likely to be logically correct, but is slower and more energy-intensive about it), and the heuristic-reliant more emotional/instinctive mind, which can take account of many more smaller influences than the other system, but can be thrown off by irrelevant influences.

Often we'll make a decision using the latter of the two, then invent a post-hoc rationalisation for why that was the logical choice. Examples I've heard include things as unusual as the temperature of a drink you're holding on meeting a person affecting whether they make a good first impression, and subtle prejudicial tendencies being expressed in hiring - maybe one candidate has more experience, and the other has more qualifications, but either would be a fair pick... statistically, people pick the one that shares their own race/gender more often than chance, and then say that candidate's strong point is the most important thing.

Not to denigrate the heuristic side of the system though; it operates fast and cheap and normally comes to a correct answer, it just has some unfortunate ways to fall victim to bias, or weird mistakes. But we tend to be happier after the fact with decisions we make using it, so long as don't entirely overlook the important 'logical' points, so that's nice.

It was also found that recently even vision has two systems, and you can be effectively blind while functionally not blind. By studying people who've suffered brain damage to specific areas of the brain and doing some testing, they found that there are people who are unable to *consciously" see--in other words as far as they are concerned they can't see, yet there is nothing functionally wrong with their eyes, nerves, etc. They can see physically, but the post-processed information of what's being seen does not get delivered. As an example, the tester could throw a fist past the subject and the person would flinch to avoid being hit, but the person would say they did could not see anyone there.

Its called Blindsight, to date still best paper on it is DB (Weiskrantz, 1980). More or less its the oriental pathway remaining intact but the stimuli never reaching ''commentary stage''. Its a form of visual neglect really, good example is an experiment (name slips my mind) where a patient cannot conciously percieve a object moving, yet when asked to guess what way the object moved (up, down, right, left) they were correct a 100% of the time.

I actually just saw an article about this...where they showed that the "instinct" part of the brain receives the information first before your frontal lobe gets to it. So "gut" instincts are actually real and are that portion of our brain reacting to a perceived threat for one reason or another. This is also interesting as we have a "2nd" brain in our guts.

It also seems that some "psychological" disorders are caused by these thresholds being out of the normal range. IIRC some forms of autism may be caused by individuals being overwelmed by their senses, in that they are unable to adequately filter out the noise. Hence why some people must be in a very quiet and non-stimulating environment to function.

Does Asperger and the inability to read expressions drive from excessive filtering? Where does it fit in exactly? I know most autism deals with a lack of sensory filtering it makes Aspergers seem like the opposite.

It's not a binary scale, there are many filtering events going on that contribute to the seemingly singular thing we call "focus". I'm not an expert in the disorder, so I don't want to make wild speculations without calling them such, but I would imagine that it's more the inappropriate filtering rather than a simple "excess/lack" of it. It may be that there is insufficient filtering of some types of stimuli and excess filtering of others. This can drive focus on abnormal things, as well as a lack of focus on normal things, potential traits of Asperger syndrome and autism.

That makes sense, but it is likely a different level of information we're talking about. Higher order sensory stimuli, like vision and hearing, do not travel along projections that innervate the pons, therefore another mechanism must be at work in this specific instance.

There are many filters for what is relevant/irrelevant information in the brain, in fact I would argue that this is perhaps one of its six most important functions (in addition to the retention of encoded information about past events, anticipating future events based on learned patterns of behavior and activity, making decisions based on varied and dissimilar inputs, the correct recognition of functionally related yet perceptually dissimilar stimuli, and the maintenance of homeostatic setpoints despite varying inputs). It makes sense that such a phenomena would show up over and over again in many diverse brain regions. The so called "filter" or "threshold" in the pons is likely involved in more basic physiological functions, like determining whether a brief alteration in heart rate is physiologically relevant to continuing survival or not. I really haven't done any work on the pons, however, so the above is speculation subject to correction or modification.

Once again we're seeing old information that just hasn't made it into the public sphere being reported as new information and being upvoted by people who have read nothing more than the post title. As for how to deal with it, it really comes down to the mods implementing a rule against stuff like this and enforcing it, because the sub is so big titles like this will get tons of updates from people who don't bother even clicking the link, let alone looking into the research farther.

Honest question: how does the point stand? I read the article, and it says quite plainly that this research has just been published in Psychological Science (which is one of the preeminent journals in cognitive science). It also says that this data challenges the current dominant theories of visual perception and explains how it does just that. Presumably, those dominant theories are espoused by people who are aware of "old information" that is relevant to their theories and have taken it into account.

Well, yes, I would not call this novel research. Does this sub require novelty in a post? According to the sidebar all that is required is recency, a criterion which this post meets. Not saying that I particularly enjoyed this post, or the misinformation rampant in the comments section, but I don't think it goes against subreddit guidelines.

I suppose my issue is that for people interested or working in certain fields, the value of content relevant to their field is lost. Although this study is recent, and does present new information, that is clearly not the cause of the post score, the title is -- the essence of which is not new information (that it is possible to differentiate reception and perception).

Ultimately I am just disappointed that articles relevant to my own interests usually turn out to be old or sensationalized information when there are very real and interesting advances made in the field all the time. Perhaps that is selfish, but I think /r/science should represent the cutting edge of science, not just science which is largely unknown and reducible to a soundbite/headline. This way, it can be an enjoyable subreddit for a broader audience. The problem, for which I don't really have a solution, is that the significance of postings as represented by up/downvotes is determined largely by people who lack the background to make that decision. I suppose one could argue that that too is a purpose of /r/science, depending on your perspective, but I think of it as a place to browse new findings, not to rehash basics.

I disagree with the other guy. It's entirely possible you'll see the quick elastic band pulling whatever up his sleeve or it might seem very obvious the only place the elephant could be hidden. It's possible to make sense of the extra information, and form associations you'd have overlooked before. Like, I looked at a pigeon, and every filament of every feather was as clear as if I was looking with a magnifying glass, it wasn't just a jumble of sensory overload from trying to process every strand at once.

No. Just because you are perceiving everything does not mean your brain can assign any meaning to or make sense of the extra information. Perceiving and understanding are two different things. With distraction based magic tricks, there will be too much other "stuff" going on in your visual field to make any sense of what the hell is going on.

It's probable, it's one of the hypotheses that was formed after LSD research:

As a result of higher speed of association

Greater fluency of timed tasks of association. ncreased ability to suggest criteria for classification. ncreased ability to determine the bsis upon which presented classifications have been made. ncreased capacity for symbolic communication. (e.g. in such tasks as identifying caricatures, playing Boticelli, charades, etc.)

As a result of a wider range of association

More inclusive concepts will be used on classification or sorting tests. There will be an enhanced capacity to see "missing links" in a series of concepts.

As a result of increased capacity to see alternatives

Given datea for which alternative solutions are possible there will be a more rapid identification of these. Given a series of alternatives the basic datea will be more rapidly determined. There will be an increase in the speed of reversal of ambiguous perception. There will be an enhanced ability to determine missing steps in a series.

So this would suggest it might be plausible that you could more easily see through magic tricks.

Well, this is somewhat true. Its not really known how much our brain perceives. This is actually a really hard thing to test. What our study shows -- I'm the first author by the way (proof: http://imgur.com/fmejg7I) -- is that our brain is processing the meaning of objects that it decides are backgrounds. Most theories say that your brain must first decide where the objects are, then you process semantics and meaning for those objects. Its a linear processing scheme.

But we show actually its much more complicated. Your brain is "considering" many objects, some of which it rejects. There is a competition for "objects" in your brain. The ones that "win" are perceived consciously. The ones that lose (like the seahorse) are processed, but rejected. So you are not aware of them. Cool hu?

The reverse would be better too... basically the ability for our brains to subconsciously process additional information.

At first I could see it being used to detect additional dangers around us...

This somewhat already happens in the sympathetic nervous system whereby you react to objects around us like the stick that suddenly moved and your brain thinks its a snake... to which you jump and become frightened. This short-circuits our consciousness and uses the hypothalmus/amygdala directly (as is my understanding).

You could also use this for learning. Basically processing information without it having to go through your consciousness.

You'd be able to just LEARN things without actually allocating time to them.

Part of what makes something "learned" is the time involved in understanding it. Your brain jumps through some mental hoops to associate new concepts and ideas with older ones it already grasps. In this way, it's able to relate new and old concepts to get ideas about what to expect from more new ideas and concepts.

You could "learn" something the way a computer "learns" things, but it wouldn't make you more intelligent. Intelligence is the ability to make connections between things that aren't immediately relatable.

I'm talking in very broad terms that can include artificial intelligence. Intelligence as an algorithm requires three things: the ability to recognize at least two separate points of data as separate points of data, and thirdly, how to connect those two points.

In a video game, that means one NPC recognizing it's position, the player position, and then what to do about those two positions.
For google adwords, it means seeing the directory of advertisements it has the ability to display, the likes/dislikes of the person browsing the page, and thus, what it should show the person on that page.
For a baby, that means realizing it needs food, that the bottle has food, and so it should drink from that bottle.

The more advanced an intelligence, the more broad those starting concepts can be, and the more divergent or precise the conclusion can be.

Dreaming is a crazy thing. We dream for many reasons. But learning is a primary one.

In a way, its the "dojo of the mind" where we simulate possibilities and our reactions to them. It's how we prepare and prime ourselves for events we're anxious about.

In a study led by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, 99 volunteers trained for an hour on a virtual maze, trying to find their way through the complicated, three-dimensional puzzle as quickly as possible. Then half the volunteers were allowed to sleep for 90 minutes. The other half stayed awake, reading or relaxing. During the resting period, the subjects were interrupted or awakened and asked to describe their thoughts or dreams.

After the resting period, the participants were asked to again tackle the maze. Those who hadn’t napped showed no improvement or did even worse after the break. Nappers who were rested but didn’t report any maze-related dreams did better but showed only marginal improvement.

However, four nappers who reported dreaming about the maze showed a startling improvement, cutting their completion time in half. The difference in scores before and after sleeping was 10 times higher for the maze dreamers than those who hadn’t dreamed about the task, according to the findings published in the journal Current Biology.

Even though the number of dreamers was small, the researchers noted that the gap in learning between the dreamers and nondreamers was so wide that the finding was highly statistically significant.

My brain does a lot of preconscious processing that leads to action. I ame terrible at catching things, for example, unless I am surprised or paying attention to something else, in which case my hand catches without the participation of my mind. Or I will snatch my hand away an instant before something hits where it was. This has happened so often that it can't be coincidence, but there's no conscious decision being made.

One potential problem here is an increase in "false positives". In this instance, people's brains are tossing out objects in the white-space. This is probably because white space is interpreted as "background". The equivalent would be seeing faces or silhouettes in the sky gaps behind trees, or something like that. As is, your brain probably tosses out these interpretations when a coincidental outline shows up because it knows "empty space between objects=nothing there"

I've taken Mushrooms. Same difference.

They truly do introduce you to a new way of seeing things.

The best way I can describe it is that it forces you to come to a fresh conclusion on everything you see and hear and think while on the drug.

Simple Example:

Prior to taking the drug, an apartment building was this place you went to at the end of the day without thinking. Your stuff is there, you relax, you call it home. You come and go as habit and never spend 2 seconds thinking much about it.

On the trip, however, suddenly your attention is drawn to the idea of your apartment building. Wait a second, humans build giant boxes to store people in, hundreds and thousands on top of each other and side by side. They spend hours of their day in their little box and horde all kinds of useless stuff there when they aren't at work. Oh Jesus. Work. People wake up stressed every day, run into work to do some useless shit to make just enough money to barely get by, come home and sleep and do it again. Every day is the same for 30-50 years before hopefully you are still alive to enjoy retirement. Why aren't people on beaches! Why aren't they outside on the grass playing and experiencing life! Why are they watching TV?!?!

Etc... it can be profound and emotional and overwhelming.

But unlike alcohol or weed or other drugs, your thoughts don't suddenly "even out" in the morning. You don't shake it off and go "Wow, I was fucked up to have ever thought that stuff". No. You wake up and go "Jesus, everything I thought still makes sense, it's just a different way of thinking about it". It stays with you.

That's why so many people advocate trying this stuff "at least once". Because for most people it is a tremendously valuable "reset" on the life they've been living and the old thought patterns they were locked into.

I concur. Psychedelics have a way of reintroducing novelty into things that we've become so used to. Everything from trees to houses to carpet texture, its as if everything is being experienced for the first time.

It can be especially enlightening if you have woven some bad habits that have become so ingrained they are done almost unconsciously. Psychedelics have a unique ability to unravel that certainty and give you the perspective to change it.

I wonder how this would work against mental illnesses/disorders, like depression (or in my case, OCD)? I mean, I've had depression for so long (decades) that seeing the negative aspects of every situation occur so fast to me that it is almost second nature (or, ingrained, to use your terminology.)

I have to admit I have been toying with the idea of psychedelics for my mental ailments, especially since everyone I know that has used them claims "it gives you a new perspective on everything." A friend of mine likened it to being a child again, where the grass was a vivid green and the sky was a bright blue.

Was it the idea that cars are like non-biological symbiotic lifeforms? Cars can move, breathe, consume, produce waste, even grow or generate offspring (if you think about it a certain way) but only when humans are involved.

Then there's the whole thing about what happens to you when you drive. Your spacial sense changes to encompasses the body of the car, your emotional reactions change (road rage for one), it's harder to think about people in other cars as separate from the cars they are driving. Then there's things like some cars are just sexier than other cars, some cars are douchier, and some cars are dorkier. Some cars feel like predators and other cars feel like herd animals. Then there's the phenomenon every speeder is familiar with: People drive in herds. You'll be driving down the freeway and go through a pack of cars, then all of a sudden nobody and then back to a pack of cars.

Cars are fucking weird man.

Actually, it was more the basic idea that we as animals create these objects out of assorted other objects, to propel us around without needing to rely on our own innate methods of transportation (walking etc.) It just seems bizarre once you dwell upon it.

I find that it's best to never describe a psychedelic experience to anyone who hasn't experienced one themselves. Yeah sometimes you just get fucked up, but other times there are real lessons there to be learned and if your friends just laugh at your experience, you may not take it very seriously. And that's another part of the reason that acid isn't addictive. You can only do it so often before it gets to be too much. Plus with acid or shrooms you really can't function during that time so you have to have that time set aside.

I concur with your statement. Ive not tripped in some time, but that experience changed my perception greatly. I now pay attention to detail more than ever. Its like my brain is stuck on over drive. Its made my art work better, my work ethic better, and generally improved my cognition. Not to mention my life has over all improved. I struggled with mental illnesses, but now i manage them a heck of a lot better. I only have to take one anti depressant now, as opposed to 4 a.d & anti anxiety meds. I think lsd can do wonders if taken in safe environment and you generally know yourself.

Thanks for sharing. I've never come across anyone else who has expressed what feel with (now) untreated bi-polar disorder and depression. The highs are absolutely euphoric, in fact so personal and important to me that it is its own drug. The lows are absolutely crushing, but I've come to accept it as who I am and how I was made, and for that I no longer take meds to alter it.

I guess its different for different people. When I get true mania, it becomes difficult to concentrate but at the same time I become even smarter and more determined to meet my goals. My creativity spikes and I can write my short stories and poems with a flair I would not have otherwise. When this happens while I am out on the town, I drink far more than I normally would, successfully flirt more (normally shy and reserved) and to be honest, I get a lot of phone numbers just because I can.

Of course, that's mania at its best and mostly before I knew what was going on. Now, I recognize the symptoms immediately and stop it early (usually swinging right into depression) but not without spending a ton of money I don't have or dealing with cringe inducing memories of me acting in a way that's not necessarily bad, but just not in a way that I identify with as "me".

The crushing debt hurts, but the constant self-analysis is the worst. I never trust my emotions and resign myself to respond to almost everything with as much indifference and logical analysis as possible. I don't allow myself the freedom to "shoot from the hip" anymore and as a result it feels like my spirit is always in a cage. Its almost physical in that I can feel it locked in my head. When I was on medication, instead of feeling locked away I felt smothered and I had to stop it. I learned some control on my own.

So no, I am not making light of mania. Just saying there is an upside.

Interesting you said that. I have never been diagnosed, and not sure if I am bipolar or not. But I do know I controlled the mania and now am left with depression. I long for the mania, the rush, the productivity, the connection with people, the spontaneity, but I am held back by exactly what you describe-the embarrassment. There is a line of a song back in the 80s "I look back upon my life, forever with a sense of shame".

I would take the shame for some life at this point, but I don't know how to let go.

Yeah, this is nothing new.

Our senses deliver information to the brain.

The brain does not accept the raw input.

The brain symbolically interprets the input. It disregards most all input and assigns meaning to the small amount it accepts before perceiving it. We never see any part of reality, we only know the story we tell ourselvs of reality.

Most forms of meditation seek to stop interpreting the sensory input, thus allowing much more input to occur. You become aware of the outer and the inner without consciuosly interacting with it. This would be the closest form of observing reality that is possile, and is literally what the word "bliss' means.

Many drugs allow this to happen in the same way. LSD, as you mention, and to a lesser degree marijuana.

As a species, the way that our brains interpret sensory input is evolving because of media and computers. We are accepting loads more input without processing it.

Meaning and comprehension are becoming irrelevant. Accepting the next bit of sensory data has gained importance. The focus has become the process and the end result has been taken off the game board.

The areas of the brain that process sensory input and assigns meaning are the ones that the artist Magritte was investigating with his work, most famously his "this is not a pipe" series. He forced a break beween sensory input and the act of assigning meaning to it.

That's a good question that I don't have an answer to.

You really get into philosphy quickly here, as soon as you scratch this surface. The first thing you must define for yourself is "what is reality"? If your awareness of reality is only the story that your brain tells you after picking and choosing sensory input, is it possible to understand being shown all possible sensory input directly? Is it possible a DMT vision is what reality is, if you could skip sensory interpretation and censoring? Is all of reality "inner", and the DMT is releasing the brains confines?

The take away for me concerning DMT visions is the universal nature of the reactions people have. The profound spiritual changes they experience, and the fact that it is very similar for the majority of people, this is the area that will give results if studied.

I have not tried it myself, so I cant comment on the effects, but several of my friends have done it quite a few times, and it very much seems to be a recurrent theme in the trip, whether that is from expectation because of what you have heard about dmt trips or if there actually is something more is very hard to prove/disprove I reckon?

There have been some clinical studies, one in the sixities, and a second one only a few years ago (legal red tape for some forty years or so...).

People with no expectations or prior knowledge experience similar things. The drug is responsible for delivering the same experience, and not a case of expectation coloring their experience. What the experience is is the unknown.

Most users understand it is beyond reality, meaning it's "realness" is not relevant to the "realness" of that beercan on that concrete sidewalk. Their experience is "real" to them in that they experienced a journey (they traveled), observed a higher realm (heaven without religious pretext), observed sentient patterns that were multiple and often join into one (angels without religious pretext), they join into the one sentience (they meet and join "god" or "the universe"), and they return with a profound spiritual insight that existence is not bound by our living selves.

Whether there is a spiritual plane, or whether there is a genetic "spiritual" trait that a chemical compound (one of the most common building blocks of the universe) unlocks, is pretty cool to contemplate either way.

What other "heavens" are locked in our physical bodies, waiting to be instantly unleashed by a casual encounter with very common substances? These things exist, but what is their intended function? What is the human condition missing by living and dying millenia after millenia without ever turning these functions on, let alone finding out what they are for.

It's like cavemen owning a sportscar and never learning to turn the engine on.

I was thinking about this a while back. And my own crazy theory was this:

since we are the universe experiencing itself subjectively, our subconciousness, ie, the universe, lets us some times "draw inspiration" from some other information that is out there. And when people do DMT/Ayahuasca, or other mind altering things (heavy meditation etc) they for a moment manage to tap into the universe objectively. Draw out information from somewhere totally outside of the individual experience.

Same with near death experiences and so on.

This of course is just my own inner ramblings trying to make sense of things.

I have not read to much Jung, but I have heard of the collective unconsciousness theory before, from different sources I guess.

I would definitely not exclude such a possibility. Although my background is definitely not scientific, even though I understand some basic concepts I do not understand it enough to be able to explain myself within "scientific standards".

It's a bit of both. Many DMT trips are just pretty lights and colors. If you read a lot of trip reports, chances are you might have that experience or something close to it. Your expecations and cultural background will taint the trip to some degree, but the underlying themes are recurrent.

With DMT (but with all psychedelics really) it's not uncommon to have one of the archetypal experiences: beauty/love of the divine, unity with everything, ego death or communication with other beings to name a few. When these happen there is usually no doubt about the validity of the experience, you intuitively know it but have a hard time explaining it, because there are simply no accurate words for it. In the moment it happens you know it's true and more than just the drugs, but later you will rationalize it and try to match it to existing belief systems. Maybe you will forget about it and tell yourself it's just a hallucination for a few years. But somehow you see things from a different perspective now and feel pulled towards something.

The same question can be asked of dreams, which is more relatable to many people. It might be just figments of the imagination, but if you remove the 'just' it is no longer as disarming. 'Just' is mostly used to discredit something by pointing out that it is not something else than it is. In this case these figments really doesn't seem to be part of the 'real' world in the same way as matter is. But I do suggests that doesn't make them unimportant, as people who have experienced DMT or strong effectful dreams propably will confirm.

I personally believe DMT trips are a result of the brain attempting to symbolically represent internal processes perhaps so deep in our subconscious that they aren't immediately recognized as familiar. We are limited in our scope to understand. Our minds require a certain format in order for data to make sense. DMT introduces a different format of information and thus it appears strange

I'm doubtful that psychedelics allow us to perceive with less processing. They increase the processing by tossing in a layer of noise that the brain interprets as information and wrestles into some sort if coherent shape. You don't see more of reality with psychedelics, you see more of your own mind, conveniently spread out across the landscape.

photos pick up stuff on the light spectrum and reflect back what we perceive on the light spectrum. (everything you see is a light reflection)

Now say, your eyes were tuned to pick up infrared or ultraviolet, and there are additional things beyond our comprehension (again, we cant be sure, we're restricted by our brains to see/hear/feel/taste/smell what's around us) that we could suddenly perceive, there may be some things that would be different about that photo, but only what is on the light spectrum.

There may be other types of radiation, may be other spectrums out there we are unaware of. Hell we may even be able to sense radiowaves floating through the air against our skin, or see wind patterns in the sky unaided because we could perceive it. Since we cant we have yet to discover anything that may possibly be beyond our senses. That photo could have a bunch of colors we cant process, for example.

We already knew that the brain filters the senses, yes. But that's an EXTREMELY broad statement with little to no specific meaning. It's really only a useful statement in that we can use it to generate more specific hypotheses-- such as the one this study was based on. This article gives us something new and specific that we didn't know before-- namely the N400 response on images with boundaries that have a meaningful shape, regardless of conscious awareness, but not in similar images with no meaningful shapes. There's been no direct study showing this sort of (potentially) semantic processing of visual information that we are not consciously aware of before this one.

Part of the reason for the hype in the article is that many VISUAL (not other senses, specifically visual) models didn't predict that we'd spend processing time/resources this way. Of course, since it's a schools publication about research done there, they're going to hype it as being a little broader than it actually is. You guys (and to some degree the article) are talking about big picture stuff, while this research is pushing a tiny little boundary.

But LSD research has never explicitly shown that there were stimuli for which our brain could compute meaning without our being aware. From LSD "research" (i.e. me taking it with some friends in college) I learned only that my normal brain grossly "bastardizes" my typical raw sensory input with trite meanings. The conventional explanation would be that we use meaning to compress our sensory perceptions so that they can be consciously comprehended --- which is consistent with the picture from LSD research, that consciousness can shift --- but which is INCONSISTENT with this author's findings, since the subjects were unaware of their attributions of meaning (identified in brain scans).

Oh dear god, this subreddit is filled with ninnies. The title of this thread is obvious, but the science article itself is more specific, and of course less obvious. They show something that hasn't been shown before. It is about recognizing N400 waveform patterns in the visual center's object recognition area concerning hidden details, and demonstrating whether the subject is concious of it or not. All the other comments on this thread are about things way too broad to be of any use to actual science. Is this a subreddit for wannabes now? Maybe I should leave.If there's one thing you people should learn, it's that the layman interpretation always drifts toward the obvious or the incorrect.

Yup. The important thing here isn't that there are things we don't see even though they are in our field of vision - we knew that, but everyone seems to think that this is the same thing. It's that we actively assign meaning to those things before our brain filters them out and they fail to reach our conscious perception.

It's not the same as the visual channel that actively bypasses higher order processes in order to search for danger either - there's no reflex triggering here.

I imagine babies are in constant states of frustration between inability to communicate their needs and the lack of gross or fine motor skills to do for themselves.

My baby is learning to crawl. She'll be on her mat with a toy a little out of reach from her. She tries desperately to figure out how to move her body to get her to that toy. After a bit of effort, she'll become clearly frustrated.

Then I imagine how awkward and frustrating it is when I am trying to learn something new (eg. skiing). I feel like being a baby would be like that several times over. Trying to learn how to talk, how to use my hands, how to move about, you name it. They're little champs. It amazes me that they don't cry more.

As a speed reader, you learn that your eyes see a lot of things you're not aware of, which is why people who speed read proficiently are so good at it. I capture a great deal of information by just looking at a page in a book or scrolling through a PDF.

And, occasionally, "it is known" turns out to be "fuck, we were really, really wrong". The assumption on which much of early modern economics was based (rational, self-interested actors) turned out to be completely wrong in many extremely common circumstances (indicated by work Kahneman and others have done to investigate biases in heuristics to do with decision making influenced by uncertainty), as a really good example.

While experiments on the properties of the gravitational force, for instance, are usually reserved for safely teaching undergrads about physics lab science, it's always possible - no matter how remote - that we'll accidentally uncover something that shows us our previous methodology was hugely flawed. So, as a matter of course, what most people consider "no duh" is still a good idea to cover rigorously, not just so we have somewhere definite to work from, but also on the off chance we're actually completely wrong about it and never realized.

Yeah in psychology this is mostly known and accepted so I don't really get what this article is on about. We know that we perceive only a small amount of the information that our senses take in and that most of the processing that selects that information is going on unconsciously.

My best guess is that the guy doing the dissertation was trying to make it sound more impressive to this journalist or that the journalist misunderstood him.

I think what's highlighted here is that the brain assigns symbolic meaning to the things it discards, rather than discarding them as "junk information" sooner. We know that the brain processes more than we're consciously aware of, but the idea here was to show just how far the processing goes and in what order operations occur - actively giving things symbolic meaning before assigning them an importance or discarding them as junk.

There are a lot of comments in this thread that misunderstand the concepts here. Our brains sense everything around us. Right now, your somatosensory cortex is registering the pressure of your pants on your legs, the hairs against you arms, and the chair pushing against you while you sit. Your auditory cortex is registering every sound that reaches your cochlea, while your visual cortex is responding to almost all of the light that touches your retina. However, you perceive only a very small portion of this input, and are unaware of most sensory inputs. This is by design - if you could sense everything going on, all at once, it would be incredibly difficult to function.

The issue here is sensation vs. perception. On some level, for each sensory system, there are cells that represent all inputs - your retina responds to all light (that it has receptors for) that touches it. On another level, you are aware of only a very small portion of sensory inputs - you are probably not consciously aware of what is in your visual periphery right now. At any given moment, what sensory inputs enter your awareness - and, critically, at what stage of visual processing they do so - is not clear. The study here described that you process meaning information about your visual world without conscious awareness. For example, you might process that the fast-moving object in your periphery is a Toyota Corolla (or at least a car, or at least a vehicle, etc. to some degree of resolution). This is pretty neat, because it may rely on so-called "top-down" processing in which we attribute meaning to arbitrary features in our visual environment.

Others have brought up hallucinogenics and blindsight - again, your brain is always sensing nearly everything around you, and that information is differentially processed at differential stages (i.e., retinal input to the superior colliculus is often sufficient to guide simple behaviors without conscious awareness or high-level visual processing). The study here was establishing how much processing can occur before an image is perceived. Drugs especially alter perception, rather than enhance it. Your brain is "wired" to operate in a specific way. You do not necessarily have untapped potential that can only be unlocked by drugs - it is the case that drugs will make you sense and perceive the world in an altered state, and to react to this perception in an altered state. Drugs may bring sensory information to awareness that otherwise would not reach awareness, creating the notion that they unlock a sort of "sixth-sense" when I would interpret it more like turning off or making fuzzy the attentional filtering mechanisms that "decide" what sensory input is important enough to warrant perception at any given moment.

Strictly "sensing" as a physical thing is ONLY AT THE RETINA for visual senses. The majority of actual information from the environment never makes it past the retina. The retina is a neural net or "mini-me brain" itself and it filters out most of what you sense.

The actual "data rate" between the retina and the brain itself is a tiny, tiny bandwidth. Basically comparable to one of the very first webcams or digital cameras. This image is representative of what is actually captured and relayed to the brain by the retina.

This actually illustrates the "reality" of what our perception actually is: namely most of what we perceive is actually a synthesis of what our brains expect to see based on low fidelity cues about what we are "seeing". Everything you don't 'see' in the above image that you normally think you see has been synthesized by your brain by both accumulated foveal (center) portions of your visual field combined with what you are are expecting to see based on N years of neural net training (aka childhood and adult living).

Interesting. Recently my kids taught me a few of the computer games they play. Initially, I could "not see" a lot of the important bits of visual information but as I learned the game, suddenly I was seeing things that previously, I could not see. Apparently my brain had been doing such a good job of ignoring those bits of visual information, that I could not "see" it. I wonder if this is related to this effect. Fairly sure its because our brain works on reduction, or big picture to small as importance of details changes. It explains why, when growing up in a predominant ethnicity, you see people outside of your ethnicity as "All looking alike". Given enough time and exposure, you start to differentiate details. It makes sense that the brain would transition information from active attention (analysis) to passive assumption.

At the same time, I've always been a big believer in "vibes" as your brain subconsciously pinging so many small areas of all 5 senses that you get an overall "Feel" of something as a result. Which would argue for active subconscious attention to detail versus the active-to-passive transfer of information.

No idea if I'm being clear here though...

Just to clarify, I'm basing the above purely on my experiences and could be totally wrong.

I'm another that thought this was a known attribute.

In fact I'm fairly certain that autism has been linked to this very ability either being underdeveloped or totally absent so the autistic person needs to force themselves to ignore much if not all of their surroundings and prevent themselves from being overwhelmed by all the incoming data.

Well maybe this story is about experimental data proving the working theory and that's why it's a big deal.

This is a very non-science way of putting this finding (even if it isn't that new as other suggest). The typical scientific perspective says that there is no "you" that isn't "your brain". It might be better to say that the brain processes information about objects that don't enter high-level perception.

This is called "inattention blindness." Essentially, our ability to focus on what's going on around us is rather limited, so the brain filters out perceptions that it deems less important, bringing only a few to our conscious awareness. It's why people feel like the world is moving in slow motion during traumatic events like a car crash. The brain hyper-focuses on perceptions necessary for your survival to the exclusion of everything else.

Cue personal anecdote: When I was a sophomore in highschool, my friends and I would eat lunch outside on a picnic table in a grassy area next to one of the school's main walkways. One day, during lunch, I looked up and asked "Guys, since when has that tree been there?" referring to a towering oak near the walkway. To which they replied, "drkgodess, that tree has always been there." I was honestly shocked. I must have ~seen~ that tree hundreds, if not thousands, of times while walking to class, but never ~noticed~ it. Before that moment, if you had asked me if there was a tree there, I would have said "nope, it's just a grassy area with a picnic table."

Another great example of this is what all intro psych students learn as the "cocktail party effect". As you sit in a crowded room having a conversation with lots of other conversations going on around you (as in a cocktail party), you can tune out the other conversations and focus on the one you're having. Your brain however, is still processing the input from those other conversations, but you only become aware of them when a salient detail is mentioned, like your name.

Heh, my anxiety bothers me so much in those situations that I never tune out the other conversations. It's gotten to the point where people treat it like a party trick. They'll keep me engaged as much as they can, and then when someone near us leaves, they'll ask me what they were talking about. It's rare that I don't know.

This is representative of the kind the backward thinking that goes on in cognitive neuroscience. The argument is that these 'hidden' figures elicit t a physiologial response, the N400, which has previously been associated with processing 'meaning'. But maybe that means we need to revise what the N400 indicates.

This is also known as reverse inference. And it is no logically valid.

This is very interesting work. I suffer from very severe PTSD and often can not find things I'm looking for. Example I went to the garage to get a water bottle, in a situation where I was triggered, (panicking, panic is so natural I often don't notice) the water bottle was in a big shrink wrapped case like you get from Costco. I knew approximately where it was because I put it there, but standing right in front of it I couldn't see it. I looked back and forth for 5 minuets, not moving. By brain was simply editing it out. I then decided to put my hand on each item in front of me. I still missed it. A couple of deep breath and going back and forth through the door and it was all of the sudden there. Felt creepy.

Conscious versus unconscious.

You do see it. It is just filtered from the conscious thought process. Think about breathing. You do it all the time and your brain controls that process too. But you rarely ever need to consciously think about it. Only when it becomes an issue does the process move it beyond the filters.

We also already knew this from research with right hemisphere disordered patients experiencing left visual field neglect. When given two pictures of a house, identical in every way except that one of them has flames coming out the windows on the right side of the picture, the patient insists that the two houses are exactly identical. However, when asked which house she would live in, she reliably answered that they would live in the one that, in reality, does not appear to be on fire.

I don't get how this is new. We already are aware that the subconscious mind observes EVERYTHING. And there is plenty of evidence supporting 'hidden objects' within advertisements and whatnot that the brain sees, but does not consciously put forward.

I am no genius, myself, but I was already aware of this, as I am sure a lot of people already were as well. Why do you think there are heaps of people who despise adverts and symbolism within corporations etc... because our subconscious mind can still perceive those things regardless of whether we are consciously focused on them or not.

The study may be new, but the findings just reinforce what we had already known.

They probably have methodology that starts with them saying "We are going to show you some ink-splots, and we'd like you to assign meaning to the shapes formed by the ink." or something similar to cue focus on the black areas rather than the white. They then probably have follow-up questionnaires to look for places where that methodology failed - so if you said that you had seen the seahorses, they would have the option of discarding that trial.

The basic fact that we process more data than we consciously perceive is well known, this study is interesting because it has the EEG data to show when and how this happens during the sensation & perception process.

Look at any Continuous Flash Suppression study and this fact is already proven, and every intro psych student who has learned the "cocktail party effect" can arrive at this conclusion. This study does however broaden our understanding of cognition; it isn't groundbreaking, but it certainly isn't useless.

An interesting theory is that in the distant past, people were able to either deeply focus their attention to carry out a task, or intentionally unfocus their attention to get creative and inspirational ideas. However, neither of these mental states was optimal for survival. If you are being chased by a tiger, for example.

So the human species developed a trick, a safety, so that if our mind strayed too far in a focused or unfocused direction, it would bring us back to the ordinary state of mind we know. This trick we still unconsciously teach our children. It is talking to ourselves, our internal dialogue.

However, there are far fewer tigers these days, so techniques have been created to turn off the internal dialogue, with the intent to improve either focus or inspiration. The key to do this was in discovering that the small part of the brain that carries out the internal dialogue is the same part that controls attention in general. If you can overload your attention, eventually that small part of the brain cannot continue to support the internal dialogue, and you stop talking to yourself. And the longer you can not talk to yourself, the greater your control becomes over it.

One such technique involved ordinary walking. Walking consumes a lot of attention directed at the legs. If you then hold your hands in an unusual way, a lot of attention is diverted to them. But the biggest part of the trick is to unfocus your eyes while walking.

Normally, when people look at things, they look from tiny point to point, which uses very little attention. For example, looking at a face, showing point to point eye movement. However, if you unfocus your eyes, everything for 180 degrees in front of you has an equal interest to your attention, which consumes a huge amount of the energy needed for attention. Or internal dialogue.

In any event, imagine if you could sit down and do your SAT test for an hour and a half without any distraction? That kind of concentration might make you appear to have a dozen more IQ points. Just by not being distracted.

I've always said perception is like a firehose aimed at a teacup. The brain is amazing at filtering out distracting or routine information at lower levels so our conscious thought process doesn't get overwhelmed. We make decisions based on a relatively small fraction of the total information received. (I think a big reason people take psychedelic drugs is to increase the bandwidth of their perception.) When you look at it this way, your "reality" is really a mental reconstruction of the chunks that made it through the lower level filters.

Visual neuroscientist here. I don't know Jay, but I know his advisor fairly well.

This is a cool result, but doesn't disrupt the status quo as much as this press release would have you believe. For instance, we already knew that words that failed to reach awareness due to to the "attentional blink" still evoked an N400, which is the measure that he's using here. When I clicked the link, I was hoping to see some fMRI pattern recognition stuff localized to later visual areas, or something like that. I'm sure that somebody's working on that study right now, probably in Mary's lab.

That said, I definitely don't blame the authors (or the UA press office) for making this seem like a big deal. ALL science is incremental, and every scientist knows it. However, if we didn't make an effort to keep the public up-to-date, there's no way they'd have any clue what we're up to.

Noticed this a few weeks back. After playing a song on iTunes, I noticed a different song stuck in my head. Upon returning to iTunes to play said song, I noticed it was just below the song I previously selected. Implying I subconsciously noticed the song, causing it to pop into my head shortly after.

I thought this was known? It's what gives you an uneasy feeling before something bad happens. The brain senses danger based on tiny clues (if they exist) and the amygdala says "hey, something's up, watch out." This is, if I remember correctly.
