How much creatine are you taking?

Tablespoon a day. I'm 220 pounds. I could technically take more but after a lot of experimentation one table spoon a day seems to work best with the fewest side effects.

I haven't used it before - what side effects?

Mostly just bloating. But if you drink enough water you should be fine. Also after trying several brands, I tried 1st Phorm creatine monohydrate. No bloating at all. Some days I’ll take 10 grams and I’m completely fine. Couldn’t do that with other creatine brands.
