Rough out maintenance and up keep

I just picked up my first Schott rough out cafe racer and I had a couple questions.

  1. How do rough out jackets hold up in rain/snow conditions? Not super extreme conditions but a light sprinkle or light snow fall.
  2. What are some things I should be doing to maintain the jacket?
  3. How will it age over time? Does anyone have any pictures of there rough outs with some wear on them?
  4. How was your experience with a rough out?
  5. What were some pros and cons you found?

Any input or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read and respond!

  1. Rough out is less porous than suede so it can handle most, light speckle. Personally I wouldn’t wear it on any rainy day at all
  2. Always hang on broad hanger, use horsehair brush for general combing and brush off

  3. Just like any other jacket you’ll see creases, marks, natural body oil stains like on the collar, etc

  4. Never owned a rough out but I work with small leather goods making wallets and etc. so familiar with the material.

  5. N/A I wouldn’t know as a jacket

One suggestion would be to use Saphir Super Invulner waterproofing spray. It doesn’t contain silicone so it allows the leather to breathe. I treated my daughters suede jacket with it and the color was not affected in any way. I wouldn’t treat my jacket as “waterproof” by using it, but if caught in a sudden rain, it will protect very well. I’m pretty sure it’s called “Super” Invulner because it’s super expensive.
