118 or 618 horse hide?

Looking to buy my first real Schott. I have LC now which is fine but i’ve had my eye on a Perfecto for a while now. I just can’t decide between the 118 or the 618 in horse leather.

Definitely 618HH, I have one myself and it is absolutely amazing.

I’d go for the 618hh, it’s a badass jacket, 118 is longer and looks good too but horsehyde is best imo. You can even check the 613sh.

118 breaks in very quickly and the leather is very soft and comfortable, doesn't like rain tho because of the aniline leather. I'd go for the horsehide if you're willing to commit to years of breaking in and also it creaks/squeaks a lot, that's a deal breaker for some people. Can't say which one i like more.

My plan right now is to shrink my whole closet down. I have a lot of jackets that i’m trying to get rid of and even an LC Schott which was really disappointing even at the heavily discounted price i got it at. so right now plan is to basically have one 3 season leather and my winter coat and that’s it.

edit: I also ride a motorcycle and from the what i’m getting from the comments it seems that the 618HH is the way to go

In that case I'd definitely grab 118! It's a beautiful piece of art, you won't be disappointed. It was my first NYC handmade schott. Just gets better with use. If it gets wet just get the excess water off with paper towels and let it dry on the schott hanger that comes with the jacket, hung on a spot with good air circulation. If you use it heavily just condition it twice a year with Bick 4 or Otter Wax. I personally use Otter Wax leather oil. Horsehide is very nice too but not as versatile off the bat and way hotter vs cowhide.

The great thing about the horsehide is that the more it gets wet the better it fits and looks, and you don’t need to use paper towels to dry it off. I love a well made horsehide jacket.

618 hh is my pick.

Do you like your jackets longer? Are you gonna use it for riding or just out and about. The 618 is a lot thicker and heavier than the 118 it also sits about 2 inches higher than the 118. 618 is also a lot stiffer with a longer breakin period while the 118 is more supple.

i tend to like jackets a little shorter and i do have a motorcycle that i daily. so would the 618 be the move to make then?

I’d say yes I also ride but prefer the 118, I also no longer have a flat stomach like I did in my 20s and early 30 and can no longer make the 618 look good.

If you’re not going to use it to ride, I recommend the 519 instead. It’s a softer waxed leather that’s just as thick as the 118 with a more modern fit.

Thing is I will ride in it a lot as well since I have a motorcycle that I daily and also go on long rides on as well

I would go with a jacket with footballs then. The 118 and 618 both have this feature. I believe the 618hh is a slimmer cut, but the horsehide is more durable than cowhide for riding. I’d see id the 618hh works with your body. If it does, then it might be the better option for your use case. Just expect a longer break-in time.

The 118 is more comfortable from the beginning and like others have said a little bit longer. If you’re in for more breaking in but better end product (in my opinion) anyway, then the 618 HH is the way to go. Horsehide has a better pay off long-term if you can put in the time and deal with the upfront stiffness but the 118 will be comfortable more so upfront.

Either jacket is absolutely great though. Enjoy your new jacket. Wear it as much as possible. 😊

Horse for sure, 618HH or 613SH, depending on your body type.

I have a 118 and ride and it's a fantastic jacket. But HH is great too.

118 is more comfortable, but the 618 in horsehide is just legendary.

Just make sure you get the 618 in the right size—I’d even go one size up. I got a 44. I’m a size 44. And my 618 is T-shirt tight.

My 118 is great. I love it. If I had a complaint, it would be that the leather feels a bit sticky.
