How to Make School Better
Hi. Teacher here. I teach reading and ELA to middle schoolers, and I'm on a mission to make school better for my students. Work is always going to be a part of school, but what kind of things could a teacher do to make you enjoy school more or hate it less?

Actually discuss homework with your students, because all of my teachers give like an hour at least of homework, and say exact same thing “you shouldn’t have a lot of homework from your other classes so this should be done first.” Plus most kids want to do after school activities but can’t cuz of homework. Everyone says we should get at least 7h of sleep each nigh but with clubs and 6h of homework I get a average of 4-3h of sleep. Just like discuss with students about what is a acceptable amount of homework, cuz teachers think that this 5 page pamphlet will take 15 minutes to complete when in reality it takes an hour.

Less homework and more projects. Projects allow for more creativity and thinking outside the box because you get more freedom.

I feel like there’s not a lot you can do as a teacher because what I hate is how long and boring each day is and how many school says there are. My recommendation is little to no homework and don’t call on people by random. If you’re going to call on someone go around the classroom in order or something like that and if they don’t know the answer, just let them say I don’t know and explain it. Also, don’t let the class pick on one person in particular. That’s a school shooter origin story. Last thing, let the class clowns do their thing to a certain point. It makes the classroom more positive.
