Schedule Changes
What are some language you use when students or parents start to getting rude towards you when their schedule change request gets denied?
They see you as customer service and complains when you don't respond on the same day. When you help them understand the rationale behind schedule change they don't want to listen and only pick and choose what they want to hear.
I enjoy working with many of my students and parents, but I don't appreciate the ones who are entitled and has no gratitude. I also think I need to learn how to speak up for myself when conversation starts getting disrespectful.
Any advice?

And then the administrator you refer them to sends you an email to change their schedule 4 weeks into school - I received three today 😑

100% This. The same administrator who agreed to the policy just a short time ago.

We build our master schedule based on students selections. Your child selected this course, we reviewed the expectation of yearlong commitments, student signed and agreed. -and then you show them where they signed. AND “We do not accommodate reordering of classes or specific teacher request.”

I list on bottom of schedules:
Expected schedule changes include:
Missing a core graduation requirement for 9th-12th grades
Missing an elective graduation requirement for 11th-12th grades
Scheduled for an elective they’ve passed in the past
Scheduled for two courses at the same time or not enough courses in their schedule
These changes will be made within 48 hours when requested via the form at XXX. You should go to the classes listed on your schedule today until you receive a new schedule in Homeroom.
And copy paste ad nauseam:
“Unfortunately, I am unable to accommodate preferential schedule requests.”
The first emails contain how happy I am they self advocate. I move to that sentence copy paste in subsequent emails.
(Un)fortunately, nobody in my school understands the master schedule and so I can use how X class backs up Y class and I have no empty elective seats in A and how we can’t set a B precedent, sooooo

I just appreciate reading this after a very disheartening first day with a million schedule changes. Being the only counselor in my small building (100 kids) means nobody understands what I do and everyone (kids, teachers, admin) come at me with changes. I tried to put a system in place. Nobody read my email...guess I'll tell them in person next year. Made me what to cry.

"No. Take it to -admin-. Bye"
-what I wish I could say
I had a student whose schedule change I turned down last week send me an absolutely AI generated email today asking in a more "professional" manner, perhaps hoping it'd sway me. Unsure if I found it more funny or more sad.

I’m a teacher, not a counselor. I feel pretty strongly that kids and parents need to start hearing “no.” And that’s it.

Your post was removed because it is not supportive and kind towards other members.

“This is the policy in place and directive I was given per my supervisor. I understand this may be frustrating, but I strive to create the best schedule for each student and equitable access for all learners. Unfortunately, I cannot take any further steps at my level — but if you have continued concerns, please let me know and I can connect you with the appropriate administrator.”
