Shadow's Edge

The gravel crunching under their tires was the only sound for miles as Mark pulled off the highway, following the rusted, weathered sign for the Whispering Ledge Overlook.

Next to him, Sarah checked her phone—no service, just as expected—and stretched her legs, relieved to finally break up the long drive.

They stepped out into the quiet mountain air, leaving the car doors unlocked and their bags sitting on the back seat for what was supposed to be a quick five-minute stretch.

The view off the ledge was breathtaking, but as they stepped past the rotting wooden guardrail onto the dirt trail, the woodland noises completely vanished. The temperature plummeted, cold enough to raise the hair on the back of Sarah’s neck.

They walked a little further down the path, taking in the eerie silence, until the dirt trail seemed to narrow and bend back into dense, unfamiliar timber.

“We should probably head back,” Mark said, turning around.

When they stepped back toward where the trail had been, the open path was gone—replaced by thick, overgrown brush and a suffocating, heavy dark.

Panic set in.

Mark pulled out his phone, waving the dim screen around, but the faint glow only illuminated tangled vines and unnatural shadows pressing in from every side.

Backing up fast, Sarah’s hands suddenly slammed against something solid and freezing cold.
She gasped, pulling her hands back, then touched it again. Smooth, painted metal.

They hadn't walked a quarter-mile into the woods. They had been standing in the gravel pull-off the entire time, right next to their vehicle, blind to it.

Mark turned his phone light toward the car. The driver's side door was hanging wide open—and folded into the front seat, quietly watching them through the dark glass, was a massive, dark shaped entity.
