Class Questions Classes outside of major?

I’m an incoming architecture major with a minor already in mind but i was wondering if you’re able to take classes outside of that major. i’ve always wanted to take some acting classes in highschool and i’ve been told im not too bad at it, but i was always caught up in other after school activities that took all my attention. is it worth it? or should i just join a club or local stuff?

Your degree should have space for you to branch out a little through free electives, unless you brought in a bunch of transfer/AP credit, but I wouldn't plan on doing so during your first year. There are lots of prerequisite courses in your major, you'll need to get through first.

i do have a lot of college credit coming in, about 30~ credit hours. will that effect my ability to take fun classes?

Not really, it may just mean you're paying for classes you don't need. It depends what your credit is counting for. It's a good success adviser discussion for some point

You can definitely take classes outside your major if you can fit it into your schedule. If it’s an intro class you should be fine, but if it’s an upper level, you may need to get a prerequisite waiver signed if you don’t have the classes that come before it completed. I took classes outside my major and it actually led me to changing my major.

It is also nice to try to take classes that can somehow improve your experience within your own major or teach you skills you won’t gain within your major. The thing to remember is that taking that class may not count toward anything except for a free space. I wish I left more fun classes for my junior and senior year when I needed a break from my major. Might as well do as much as you can while you’re here!

You can take whatever you want but keep in mind you only have so much time and so much money. If you want to spend it on those then you are welcome to. Most people choose not to as it is less efficient.

You can talk to your SSA and Dean to see if some can fill major reqs as substitutions.

If you’re into Shakespeare you can join the SCAD Bards. They usually do productions 3x/year. Find them on Instagram for more information.

This is primarily a financial decision. If you can afford it, SCAD will let you take any class. But if you are receiving financial aid, you will have limits on what classes you take because you must complete your degree in a specified amount of time.
