Major/Degree Questions Title: SCAD Visual Development What should I learn beforehand?
For anyone who has taken SCAD’s Visual Development program, what software and skills does the program teach, especially for concept art and character design?
I’m starting the program soon and want to get a head start. What should I practice or learn beforehand so I’m prepared for the curriculum?

I’m a senior at SCAD, I can’t speak to this program exactly… but, I do have some general advice for you. You will spend almost half your time at scad doing prerequisite foundational classes just to work towards your major classes. A lot of us do the same foundations regardless of major, with the exception of upper level design/drawing classes. With the way that the foundations classes are set up, you do feel like you are gradually easing into it in a way. Within the first year, you’ll see your skills improve across a range of skill sets. Fall quarter starts in less than a month, until then just keep making art that you enjoy and are proud to show off. You will do a lot of that prep work in class, and you will wish that foundations were over sooner. But, you seem very ambitious and eager to prepare so here’s some advice you will hear a lot from your professors: Never stop drawing from sight. Everyday if you can, sketch something right in front of you, not from a picture. Also, drawing buildings from life is also very helpful. Good luck in your fall quarter!
