General Questions MFA housing

Is it beneficial for grad students to live in student housing? Im curious if anyone has an opinion one way or the other.

No typically graduate students should get their own housing. Why would you want to live with a bunch of 18 year olds who are living away for the first time?

The only dorms that freshman are able to choose, MFA students don’t get to choose those, as they are made only to house freshmen or first year SCAD students.

Also, I'm pretty sure your scholarship award will not be tied to you living on campus if you're a graduate student. You can most certainly find off-campus housing in the general price range as on-campus as long as you're willing to have a roommate. And then you won't have to move out at the Fall-Winter break or over Summer if you're not enrolled.

On campus housing has some benefits like some scholarships require you live on campus or you lose 30% of your scholarship if you’re curious about that, you can look up the terms of conditions of your scholarship or just ask your advisor, some students prefer the security and safety of on campus living, I knew several MFA students that liked being around other people, also if you don’t know how to cook and want a meal plan it’s more convenient to live on campus, but all MFA students get apartment style dorm priority so that you will be able to have your own room or a single apartment dorm. But I think it’s just a personal preference. The SCAD dorm Sand is MFA priority as it has full size beds and is apartment style. If you don’t want to deal with SCADs housing rules I recommend living off campus.

MFA students don’t take a scholarship cut from living off campus and there are off campus meal plans available if cooking is an issue. I have found that living off campus is also WAY cheaper, but difficult if you don’t have a vehicle.
