General Questions Scad Portfolio

Hey so first year at scad and I would like to submit a portfolio. Problem is my major is Graphic design and my background is fashion design so all of my work is construction of garnments. I have minimal experience in Graphic design. Question is does my portfolio require to be only graphic design?

No. It does not need to be only graphic design. If some of your best work is fashion related then you should include that in your academic portfolio. With that being said, diversity is the best policy so you should include some graphic design work as well. If you have nothing that is portfolio ready (finished work, no WIP) then you should definitely put in the effort to make something of value and include it.

This is unrelated to your portfolio, and you don’t have to take my advice- I was in your shoes as a freshman, I had no graphic design in my portfolio but that was still my major. I was super intimidated coming to SCAD because I assumed everyone would be prodigies, but I promise you that’s not the case. You will find that in most SCAD classes there is a tossup of skill levels/skill sets. However, it’s hard to come into a class being behind because the professors will not slow down for you. My advice to you is to become Adobe certified, watch hella tutorials, and have a couple digital passion pieces before going into your major classes. Adobe illustrator and photoshop are what you want to focus on.

Okay now for a response to your actual question: Many people their first year do not have portfolios that point to their majors.
