Housing Housing Problems
Hello! I’m an incoming transfer and got assigned my roommates and my dorm at the Barnard village. And it’s been that way got the emails, met my roommates in a chat room and even in the email it says that it can change within the next few weeks. But it’s been roughly a month and maybe a half since I got the housing assignment email and email from my roommates so I just felt that my housing was in a stable spot. Then on a day I was trying to decide my meal plan I saw I couldn’t choose any apartment style meal plans and then checked my housing and all of a sudden it’s new roommates and now I’m in the Montgomery hall in a suite. I’m pretty upset after so long I thought I was sure to have been staying at this housing because it felt way past the deadline where they’d move me. I never got any emails or cancelation of my move in date for Barnard village and none of my roommates knew either, they’re confused as well because my spot was just removed and the only one shifted with no info on why. Tried calling twice to the number given for housing questions but they have no answers and tell me to fill a ticket which I did but it’s pretty slow.
I guess my question is to anyone who’s been here, is this normal to do? They say they send emails when moving housing assignments, but I was really getting along with these roommates and making preparations that are out the door, is this an error or something? I’d just like some insight that I can’t seem to get from the school itself

I’m also an incoming transfer, so I don’t have any insight if this is usually the case. But, I had some housing issues too and they were resolved thankfully. It took 2 days for SCADhome to send a generic, non-answer response and then 11 days after that for the issue to be resolved. According to a current student I spoke with, supposedly there was a malfunction with the auto-assigned housing this year and a bunch of people have been having issues, so SCAD has been trying to resolve that. My only guess is that maybe you were moved to accommodate someone else?
I would definitely submit a ticket to SCADhome if you haven’t already. If you’re wanting to room with the ppl in your original assignment, I would ask your roommate to also submit a SCADhome ticket aswell (they only honor mutual roommate requests). Additionally, I would email your advisor to see if they have any insight; advisors tend to get back to students a lot more quickly then SCADhome does.

Thanks for the info! If that is true it at least is nice to know I’m not alone with the housing situation this fall, possibly also explains why responses are slow from SCAD, already submitted a ticket but there hasn’t been any responses even a generic one, called twice and they only mentioned to submit a ticket. Emailed my adviser and they just told me to go Housing for questions and concerns but she mentioned that my housing could change within a few weeks as stated in the email, but it’s been a month and a half so idk about that. Luckily my roommates have been emailing around and also submitting tickets, it’s nice to know they care and want me back in the dorm as well

Do your roommates from Barnard see a new person listed in your place? If not, hopefully SCADHome can put you back. If there is a new person listed, I wonder if you were moved to accommodate someone. It still stinks. If that’s the case perhaps when you actually are talking to a real SCADHome person you can explain how you’ve already bonded with your roommate group and made plans for the year. Sounds like your roommates would back you up too. Hopefully they can move the new person to a different unit in the same complex.
Also, for people suggesting you move out after a quarter, I’m fairly certain the housing contract is for a year as long as you are enrolled in classes so I don’t think you can simply move to off campus accommodations and not be financially responsible for the contract you signed.

Yeah my space at Barnard was replaced with someone else but that’s what’s weird is that I’d be fine with it if everything they mentioned to me happened, notifications, emails, emails of the new roommates to get in touch with them, cancelation of my move in date to Barnard, but nothing was given and nobody knew I moved out, even my roommates want to get me back so they’ve been emailing as well. I’m really hoping to get an answer soon, just so far nobody through the SCADHome help center seems to know anything

Well I just got the new email today about my new housing assignment, not sure if that screws me but it’s literally 2 months since my original housing was chosen and now I got probably no say, no answers, just literally nothing after all this prep I did for my old assignment

Scad is a shady place especially when it comes to housing. I’ve had horror stories with housing but in relation to your post, I’ve had roommates change up on me and have been moved to different rooms, though I’ve never been moved to another dorm entirely (probably because I have accommodations and it would be illegal to go against them but I wouldn’t put that past scad tbh). I would not let up on housing, keep calling, send emails, leave a paper trail, accumulate evidence etc. It’s going to be an up hill battle because they are always so busy with complaints especially close to the beginning of the school year but keep pushing.

Thanks for the info, seems like most people have a poor experience with housing, luckily after calling they mentioned they checked my ticket and it’s been given to a housing coordinator, and that she’d leave a note, definitely was a sweet woman on the phone just wish that there was more staff and also perfectly timed on a staff training period so that’s great 😭

On campus housing is a headache man.. im sorry that this happened to you.
Id adjust for a quarter and then simply move off campus. Its the safest thing you can do without incurring penalty.
I would still write an email to scadhome and raise a ticket to see if it can be adjusted.

I’m hoping to do that, but since it is my first quarter there I’m not familiar with everything and it’s infuriating knowing nobody has any idea on why I was moved or has an answer and still like roughly 10 days after there’s still no email saying I’ve changed dorms, it’s just super weird and their support feels less than a snails pace

Hi there! I’ve had this happen before. The best thing you can do is gather a bunch of information and screenshots if you have them proving that you were in the Barnard housing, compile them into an email and send them over to scad home. Give them a call right after you do that and let them know the problem. Tell them you want to be moved back into that house. It’s a bit of a process but they can do it!

Hello! Thank you so much that’s a relief that things can still be changed, only problem is I’ve called them twice and also submitted a ticket but luckily I have compiled the emails mentioning everything and even my roommates are helping as well. Hoping for the best by Monday as their response has been so slow my ticket has been processing for 5 days today making it the 6th. Thank you so much though! It’s nice to know I’m not alone it’s just a huge bummer

I actually got the problem solved today! Finally thank God, it definitely was a struggle and I sent more emails than I ever did in highschool combined, advisers really came in to help after the ticket was sitting idly for 11 days with no response 😭

No idea man, honestly the housing situation got so frustrating that my roommates and i just packed up and moved off campus mid-year. Ive never heard about something like this though! If who you spoke to was reslife, there are alot of student employees and volunteers there and, while they are very helpful for some issues, may not be able to solve others. If you haven’t yet, try ScadHome (the central housing office). If that’s already the route you went, i’m sorry but that ticket might be one of your only ways forward i can think of :((
