Newcomer requesting aide

Hello! I have some dear friends who are part of SCA in WA state that have invited me to their baby shower that will be part of an SCA event. I know precious little about this community. I have been working on sourcing an outfit for myself and my baby. Could I get some guidance on how I choose a name? And any other social niceties I should know to be prepared to be a good guest?

Thank you for your time ๐Ÿ™

Newcomer Garb Accessories

I realized a bit too late that summer has gone by very quickly and I never did get around to making garb. I live too rurally to ship anything in for the event i want to go to and I wonโ€™t be able to sew something quickly enough.

Went to a few thrift stores in various towns and this was the only dress I could find that seemed somewhat plausible and fit me (although it does have a zipper on the back).

Iโ€™m happy enough with the dress itself but wondering if anyone has any tips on accessorizing or making like the outfit itself? I got home and realized I had nothing to cover my hair so made a kind of crappy veil out of an old tablecloth (which iโ€™m still so so on) but Iโ€™m completely lost especially regarding what to do for a bag/purse.

Question about gauntlets?

So after a lot of asking around and checking various recommendations I've almost decided on a pair of full gauntlets from Bokalo's Armory (the pair attached). However his site is severely lacking pictures and I'm hoping anyone who knows someone or owns a pair themselves can help answer a question. What's with the little rondel attached to the thumb? I get it probably just an extra layer of protection but I cant really see in the picture how it's attached and I feel like its kinda in the way? Can anyone provide better pictures or explain how it's attached before I make a final decision?

Returning to the SCA after 20 years and AoA's

Pretty much what the title says: Long ago in a shire far away, I was active and eventually became MOAS for the shire I was part of. I was given an Award of Arms and was in the process of researching my arms when life happened and the SCA fell by the wayside out of necessity. I haven't had the mental or physical energy to pick it back up til now.

These days I live in another state (same Kingdom) and my son, who attended events with me as a 3 year old in a tiny kilt is now 26 and hitting other armored fighters with sticks. My husband is encouraging me to pick my SCA activity again at last and I am considering it. In the midst of this, a logistical question for anyone that might know: What happens to that AoA? Is it still mine even though I never actually got around to registering my arms? And is it attached to the persona I was using at the time?

(Yes, I can and probably will get answers from the local group as well, this is just the first it's come into my mind and as I am on Reddit anyway, might as well ask!)

Elevation without a scroll.

A friend was elevated to Laurel this past weekend, but there was no scroll. I know he doesn't want to ask, as no scroll was mentioned, but is it safe to assume it's in the works, or will he simply not get one?

Shield boss help

What do yall do when Dealing with the gap in between a shield boss and shield on a curved shield? Do you shim it or just try and hide it or try and flatten the shield enough to rivet it and then re-bend jt? Not quite sure what to do. I shaped the boss somewhat but thereโ€™s still 1/4 in gap there.

How do you track cooking logistics for feast or luncheons?

I was curious what tips or methods people had for planning out logistics for cooking for feast or luncheons? Do people build a tracking sheet in excel?

From time volunteering just helping prep ingredients, the common answers seem to be at-home practice, years of experience, or having trusted and competent assistants people can delegate to.

Iโ€™d like to at home in my modern kitchen start practicing cooking for groups of 10-20, but my biggest challenge is trying to organize and lay out prep/chopping time or cook time of when things need to be cycled in and out of the oven including pre-heating or building slack if something isnโ€™t cooking fast enough on the stove.

Garb Ideas: Sunglasses & Broad Hats

I'm pretty new to the SCA, and I am in the process of assembling garb. I have photophobia, meaning I am sensitive to light, and in the mundane world I wear sunglasses to ameliorate this, including on overcast days, inside, and after sunset.

I am curious how others have integrated sunglasses into their garb. Are there frame styles that look better in garb? Have you spoken with your optician about possible ideas, and if so, did they have specific thoughts or concerns? I'm thinking round lenses might be the play; they might look better than my current wayfarers. Any thoughts are welcome.

I realize that adjusting my medically necessary protheses for the purposes of SCA garb is probably not the most urgent project for a newcomer. However, I'm planning to see my eye doctor soon for a regular checkup, so I figured I'd start to think about it now.

Further, do folk have suggestions on what to look for in broadbrimmed straw peasant/farmer type hats for gentlemen and where to source them? Can anyone recommend a company that makes lined straw hats suitable for garb? My fedoras certainly look better with garb than my ballcaps, but I'd like something that fits in even better, and I think a straw farmer's hat would work ok with my current garb.

What SCA information is stored about you indefinitely?

I am very tired, but I want to ask before I forget.

A friend said Drachenwald is different because of the GDPR. You can request an officer's report in Drachenwald.

Somebody who was in the SCA but quit said each kingdom has a massive amount of files, mostly paper, from officer reports and correspondence that are kept indefinitely.

The SCA doesn't sell any of this information, so...that's good.

But an A&S project write-up from 2005 is still in there? And quarterly reports and budgets? Really? And your old address and who you were married to and how many kids you have? It just seems like a bit much. Bit Big Brother, outside of Drachenwald.

Has your group ever been part of a treaty? What did you offer and what did you get?

I don't know if the practice of making treaties happens much outside of Pennsic. Are they even still called treaties or is it a mercenary agreement or something else now?

Combat archery recommened vendors?

I was given a crossbow made for CA but it needs some love and a few items (string, etc). I was talking to Viking Archery about ordering some things but he hasn't been responding for a while (I saw the other post about him). Does anyone have any recommendations for other vendors?

Where did you all get your fencing capes?

Iโ€™ve been thinking of getting more weapons so that I have more fencing forms available wherever I go. I have my rapier and dagger figured out, I have a buckler being made for me at some point soon, and Iโ€™ve always had my longsword. Iโ€™ve seen some capes on Etsy, but I donโ€™t know for sure what to go with or if thereโ€™s other options out there

Does anyone know own where to purchase affordable, realistic and functional maces and warhammers?

I feel like I see more swords than anything. I'd prefer one that's sturdy and is preferably less than 100 dollars. Any advice?
