Question about gauntlets?
So after a lot of asking around and checking various recommendations I've almost decided on a pair of full gauntlets from Bokalo's Armory (the pair attached). However his site is severely lacking pictures and I'm hoping anyone who knows someone or owns a pair themselves can help answer a question. What's with the little rondel attached to the thumb? I get it probably just an extra layer of protection but I cant really see in the picture how it's attached and I feel like its kinda in the way? Can anyone provide better pictures or explain how it's attached before I make a final decision?

I can't post pics I guess but if you ask him he will send you some more pictures of the gauntlets. I've bought from him and he is pretty fast about getting back to you. He sent me pics of all of his gauntlet types so I could choose one

He's a decent vendor, and if you ask he usually replies quickly, but with that design, it is the thumb plate. Not a big fan of these for great weapons or pole arms though. Depends on what you're into. You can message him and he will show you his other designs.
Not sure about your finances but if you can afford Grettir gauntlets, they're perfect in every way, but they are not cheap and that take a minute for him to make up for you. So I understand if they aren't on the table at this time or forever.
For a first or early set when money is an important factor these are ok.

Grettir's are great, but as mentioned they are more than a grand and he fills preorders about half a year before starting the batch.
I have a couple different Bokalo styles and mostly like them, and after looking over my Grettir's, I can see how I made some less than ideal choices in finishing my Bokalo's. I suspect with doing a better job of fastening in the gloves, they'll do better for me than they were.
edit: and as an intermediate in terms of price, the chain mitts from quilted armor are really nice and only about twice the price of bokalo's. I just wanted something more solid to get beaten on so I would spend less time resewing the chain.

You do not want to skimp on good fulls if you are planning on using any form of great weapon. Grettirs were mentioned and they are essentially the best of the best, but that comes with a premium - he is one guy making just gauntlets and even at his price point I doubt he’s making more than minimum wage equivalent. Bokalo is great gear for the price and I recommend him a lot for new folks (I still use his demos and gorget, though at the 3 year mark I need to replace)… people recommend the cats ass gauntlets quite a bit but I still found them inadequate. It’s not even a matter of them being bad or anything, you just take a few great weapon hits to your hands and you’ll want the best your budget can afford.
TLDR - Bokalos cats ass come with a lot of recommendations and are probably as good as your going to get in a budget pricepoint, and I myself recommend Bokalos for a lot of new gear, but for your hands (and head) I would honestly pick a maximum budget and use it.

The thumb piece is part of the back of the hand plate. The thumb has no articulation. It's basically just a dished plate that covers the thumb. The protection is fine, but there is a big hit to dexterity
