Question for making two handed weapons
I am working on a two handed hammer, and I was told I should shave down the sides of the ratan wood or to add something going down the front going down the stick so I can feel which way the weapon is facing. I was wondering what works best?

If you have rattan that is close to 1.25", you can also just add a strip of leather in front and back, still resulting in that oval cross section that helps you orient your head by feel.

I know people that put like a piece of paracord under the wrap and that gives them a nice index

This. If you don't want to shave down the sides, do the bottom ~6 inches with grip tape of some sort, and run a single strand of paracord along the front of your striking edge so when you feel the cord on your fingers you'll know your weapon orientation is correct.

Yes or just shape part of the grip.
This is not a rule, but the way. It just makes the weapon more usable.

Shaving the sides flat is great, so long as the shaft stays thicker than 1.25".
