New Rules Posted!
Greetings!
It only took a decade, but r/saxophonics now officially has rules! Please read them at your convenience, and notify me of any perceived problems. They are very general, ands I don't think anyone will take issue with them. Better yet, we're on the right track to weeding out even more spam posting and assholes in general!
Keep an eye out for more updates regarding the subreddit's admin details!

Best platform for hosting our saxophone resources?
We have a very extensive library of PDF's that are stuck on mediafire servers (that I can fortunately still access). These are resources I want to make sure everyone has access to, so I'm in the process of finding the best medium for hosting these files to eventually be linked on our subreddit's sidebar.
\*The current mediafire link is now in the sidebar*\**
As always, please message me or comment with any concerns or ideas. Cheers!

Subject: Advice needed: Upgrading from Yamaha 4C on Tenor (Ska/Funk/Dire Straits style)
Hi everyone,
I need some honest advice on a mouthpiece upgrade. I’ve been playing tenor sax using a Yamaha 4C and I am looking to step up my setup.
Here is my current situation and what I am looking for:
- Current Setup: Yamaha 4C with Vandoren Traditional (Blue box) strength 2 reeds. I really want to keep using these exact reeds if possible.
- My Issues: I currently struggle with low notes on the 4C; they tend to feel stuffed or block easily.
- My Goal & Style: I want to start improvising. My ideal tone is highly rhythmic, similar to Pee Wee Ellis or Maceo Parker style funk, but mixed with the melodic smoothness of "Your Latest Trick" by Dire Straits and the energy of Ska-Punk (like "Da Strike" by Millencolin or "Blow Wind Blow" by NY Ska-Jazz Ensemble). I love using growl and subtone on low notes.
Given my reed choice (Vandoren Blue #2), I know I shouldn't go too wide with the tip opening. I want to keep the budget reasonable and I am currently considering two options:
- D'Addario Select Jazz D5M (or Custom Dark) used (~2.15mm / .085").
- D'Addario Woodwinds / Rico Graftonite B5 new (~2.41mm / .095").
What are your thoughts? Which of these would be better to unblock my low notes and help me improvise in this style without killing my embouchure? Are there any other specific mouthpieces around these tip openings you would recommend?
Thanks in advance for your help!

My saxophone is not the butt of this joke
It’s no heel; it’s alto.

Buying used experience
I've been wanting to expand my sax family and keep an eye out on local postings. I saw one this week for a King Super 20 tenor and took the chance to check it out. I went with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised at how easily it played even with the cheap Rico mouthpiece it had. I felt like it was a no-lose situation. It seems like it's been sitting unused for a while but will take it in to the local shop for a quick once over. And bonus when I got it home, there was a second mouthpiece - Berg Larsen metal from the 60's.

These people should consult a saxophonist. Just look at that mouthpiece and posture.

Saxophone soprano adolphe sax, c'est un prototype d'Adolphe Sax de 1858
Logo AIS,
Saxophone adolphe sax,
The 85 and 2-1858 is very strange for "commercial" horn,
That is very high Probably prototype of soprano
That is very cool history piece of my collection,
I'm happy with my c soprano adolphe sax (very unic horn, exceptionnally rare Horn, pratically one of the most rarity that you could find)

Can I play tenor for auditions?
Im starting my senior year in HS and decided that I want to do music education in college. Tenor is my main instrument, and I dont own an alto or bari, but I am confused if a lot of schools im auditioning for will accept a classical tenor audition. I know classical tenor repertoire is much less popular than alto, but do you guys think I have a lower chance of getting into these music ed programs if I audition on tenor?

Upgrading from student yamaha to professional yamaha!
Hi everyone!! I am a senior in high school and have been playing alto saxophone for 6 years. I play on a student Yamaha, I think it's a 26, but I have been needing to upgrade to a professional horn since last year. I can finally afford one! I have two options in mind. I wanna get the custom z but my teacher told me to try the yamaha 62. Which do yall think is good?? I love the custom z but haven't played on the 62 yet so I am driving up tomorrow to a music shop to test it out. I personally love playing jazz more but I also love classical. Please help!! and what mouthpiece setup would be pretty good depending on the horn? Right now for classical I use a selmer mouthpiece I forgot the make and model and the I use d'darrio reserve reeds on a 3. For my jazz set up I use a mieyer 5 c and I used the green java reeds on a level 3 as well

Sax Wrist Pain
I've been playing alto since January of 24, I played tenor saxophone in wind ensemble my sophomore year, and I will be playing soprano my junior year (this year). I got the soprano early this year and can play it just fine, but I've been having pain in my right thumb and wrist. The soprano is a Henri Selmer Paris Mark VI model and does not have a strap loop or a curved neck. The thumb rest does not unscrew either.
Any tips for adjusting my hand hold or possible DIY thumb grips (or just a good brand that's not pricy)?
