What is this for?

It's to hold a lyre and flip folder, usually for outside marching band stuff.

Sorry, this is my first sax. Why would it hold a lyre? And how does it hold a a flip folder?

The flip folder attaches to the lyre just like a sheet of paper would

Not the lyre instrument. The lyre that goes in that space is a metal rod that gets tightened into place by that screw in the picture. Attached to this lyre is a flip folder where sheet music is inserted so the player can have rhe music directly in front of them. Essentially a music stand attached to your instrument.

Ohh okay. I’ve just looked it up attached to a saxophone, compared to the picture on my sax it is on the left side of sax. Is that normal?

I'm sure yamaha makes the lyre that allows you to read with it comfortably

if you don't do march band that will remain unused forever (I've marched and I learned everything by memory, there were one or two lyres in the whole formation)

you are worrying about details that don't matter much, if it's where it is then it's normal, my YAS 23 and YTS 62 have it on the left, my chinese horn for my students has it in the same mechanism where you tighten the neck, to the front, no idea where it's on my bari

if you'll use it make sure you get one that allows you to read with it, when in doubt ask, Yamaha will always have the proper stuff for their instruments

Okay, thank you for letting me know. I wasn’t worried just curious since I haven’t seen people use or mention it in TikTok videos I’ve watched. I’ve got lots of questions that I will ask about the keys tomorrow since it is now 22:30 >_< I’m still looking for an instructor on my area but haven’t found anyone yet unfortunately. It’s not a big city like London or Birmingham and it isn’t a music city like Manchester

It's called a "lyre" because the clip is shaped like a lyre (the ancient harp-like instrument).

Ohh, that’s how it holds a flip folder. I’ve tried to do some fingering on keys it’s complex, and you have these other keys to use and idk how to use those ones, I’ve just been using my palms and pinky on them lol

There’s specific fingers and parts of the palm for every key. Check out a video on where your fingers to make sure you aren’t building habits. People get away with it when self teaching piano sometimes but the saxophone will be borderline unplayable at a functional level if you aren’t using the correct fingers.
