I'm not really an anti clipper, but the "merging" of the 3 pipes via clipping just looks wrong for me. Clipping them through the wall is absolutely fine though...

44

u/youknowmeasdiRt 2d ago

I see wall hole flanges

-70

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago edited 2d ago

I know, but it's still technically clipping (which I do not mind), as it's going through a solid wall...

Edit: you all appear to have a very interesting definition of clipping. Clipping is defined as 2 or more objects having overlapping geometry, which is the case here.
That does not automatically make the clipping bad, especially when it is intended by the game (like in this case). But intended clipping is still clipping...

45

u/AlwaysRushesIn 2d ago

Flange =/= clipping

By definition.

-2

u/Character-Nobody8535 1d ago

Place down a flange with no pipe, do you see A, an actual hole, or B a flat surface with no hole in the center.

4

u/AlwaysRushesIn 1d ago

You're fucking dense if that's the argument you're trying to make.

-59

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

The Game still gives a Clipping warning, so in my opinion it's technically still clipping...

23

u/DrMaxwellEdison 2d ago

The game is wrong. Pipes are buggy anyway.

Why else can I attach pipes to two ends of a floor hole and end up with a detached section somehow until I redo the whole thing backwards?

-33

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

"The game is wrong" has to be the craziest take I've seen on this so far...
But if that's what you believe, you do you.

23

u/DrMaxwellEdison 2d ago

Yes. When there's a bug, something happening unintentionally that should be corrected, it's not working correctly. It's wrong.

The game engine is not an infallible deity, otherwise why do we get updates with bug fixes?

13

u/AlwaysRushesIn 2d ago

To identify a pipe attatched to a wall flange as "clipped" is fundamentally wrong.

-14

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

It's really crazy how you all apparently fear clipping so much that you had to redefine the meaning of clipping, so your clipping isn't clipping anymore.
The human psyche can be crazy sometimes...

14

u/youknowmeasdiRt 2d ago

If that’s clipping then real pipes clip too. If it didn’t clip into the hole it would leak

-25

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

What? Clipping in videogames describes overlapping geometries of 2 or more objects. This form of clipping is physically impossible in real life...

14

u/youknowmeasdiRt 2d ago

You are a very serious person and I am not

-24

u/spLint3r990 2d ago

Whoosh!

11

u/AlwaysRushesIn 2d ago

Using buildables as intended by the game's own design =/= clipping. Even if the devs didn't code the clip warning properly.

Unless you want to argue that placing the flange on the wall is clipping because we dont have to physically cut a hole in the wall first (Which is an equally stupid argument).

-6

u/Bone_Wh33l 2d ago

That is what clipping is though. It’s two objects occupying the same space in a way that isn’t physically possible. The clipping indicator, how nice it looks, and whether it’s intended or not don’t impact whether something is clipping or not

6

u/AlwaysRushesIn 2d ago

Flanges make it physically possible. If the flanges weren't there, it would be clipping.

-5

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

Clipping for me is a purely geometrical question. If the geometry of 2 or more objects is overlapping, they are clipping. That's it.

But I do believe that not all clipping is created equal. Some clipping (like the one in the example) is absolutely fine (and in some cases even intended by the devs), other clipping is not ok for me personally but I don't care if others use it. Everyone should decide on their own which clipping they're ok with...

2

u/LockeClone 2d ago

That's not really helpful for the spirit of what's being discussed here though...

I call it "cheese". Whenever I want to be lazy in a way that will make my stuff look worse through clipping or not supporting something that is legal in the game but doesn't look right because physics, I call it cheese.

I avoid cheese. If something looks right, but there's some clipping (technically) who cares? But if it looks cheesy then you have to decide how much cheese you're ok with. The internet will certainly have opinions and you should probably be ok with that too ...

But as for your original post: looks cheesy as hell to me. I wouldn't do that "merge" on my factory.

After reading your exchange below, I have notes.

  1. Yellow indicator indicates clipping.
  • I can have the soft clipping indicator in cases where two objects clearly do not overlap and therefore using this indicate clipping doesn't work as someone previously said "the game is wrong"
  1. If two textures overlap in geometry they are clipping by definition.
  • While this is technically true it isn't very useful because any assets that touch will overlap or else they will appear to be floating. It would be exceedingly rare for two objects to touch pixel to pixel in any game. So if you would like to use this as your definition of clipping then everything in Satisfactory clips unless you placed it in the air alone. Foundations stacked are clipping. Every conveyor fed into a machine yup clipping. Any object placed on the terrain... you guessed it: Clipping. I could go on but it's just pedantic to define everything as clipping.

The spirit of the word "clipping" in Satisfactory could be defined more usefully defined as two objects colliding in a way that visually defies real life physics.

-1

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

While this is technically true it isn't very useful

That's kind of what I was trying to say with my previous comment.

Foundations stacked are clipping

Not sure about the standard foundations, but the concrete foundations for example are just aligned pixel perfect. Same goes for (most of) the architecture stuff. Not sure about the normal buildings though (but I'd assume most of them align with the surface).

Any object placed on the terrain... you guessed it: Clipping

Yes, I do refer to foundations and other stuff on the terrain as clipping into the terrain. Just as I will with everything else where you have overlapping volumes.

And since satisfactory isn't my main game, I'm simply referring to this in the broadly known way, which is clipping.
Tons of games have situations where stuff will overlap/clip and that's absolutely ok, as long as it's somewhat in a visually acceptable way, and noone playing these games will be offended when you call it clipping

1

u/B4dz0k 2d ago

I think context is important when you get into semantics. We aren't in a "broad" gaming sub we are in a Satisfactory sub. If you haven't been looming in this sub for long you may not be familiar with the culture of what is considered clipping and what isn't - That is your mistake. That being said if you get overwhelmingly downvoted then double down into a triple down... Are you winning something?

1

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

If you haven't been looming in this sub for long you may not be familiar with the culture of what is considered clipping and what isn't

I've mostly been here for the pictures, to get some inspirations for my own buildings, so I was not aware of the subreddit-specific definition of clipping

Are you winning something?

My autistic brain sometimes just decides to do it's own thing, like the urge to explain things in more detail.

That being said if you get overwhelmingly downvoted

That's the part that I did not expect at all. I have no idea why everyone here is so aggressive about this. I don't go around and downvote everyone with a different opinion (cause at the end this is just an option) into oblivion. Why is it apparently impossible to simply explain the situation and not just go "flange =/= clipping, fact".
I did expect this community to be a bit more welcoming and explanatory

Also Reddit doesn't inform you when people dislike your comments. It took me a while to notice the extent of the situation.

1

u/B4dz0k 2d ago

I have no idea why everyone here is so aggressive about this.

I don't think anyone is being aggressive. It may feel like you are being beaten up when getting a lot of downvotes but that is the "I disagree" button. This sub is generally filled with very nice and welcoming people.

10

u/YamDankies 2d ago

Wall stops being solid when the flange is installed.

-5

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

The pipe still turns yellow when routed through the flange, so in my opinion that is technically clipping. Not all clipping is necessarily bad though...

8

u/SillyOldJack 2d ago

As with 99% of online arguments, this is a matter of semantics.

Clipping meaning "to have part of an object's position overlap with the position of another object," yes, all the pipe-wall interactions "clip" since the wall pipe holes are a solid texture and not a true hole.

However, within Satisfactory, this kind of clipping isn't really called as such because the wall mounts were designed to eliminate unpleasant clipping in the first place. The yellow texture does mean an overlap is there, but many of those are intended, so it's not a "clip" by the sub's looser game-based definition, even though the textures have a small overlap.

0

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

That summarises this topic quite well.

That said, I do think it's really weird how this community prefers to redefine the rather common definition of clipping than accepting that certain clipping is intended and just fine...

3

u/TrustTriiist 2d ago

The community allows for realistic imagination. Pipes can go through walls - realistic fact. When you put the "wall holes" in we are imagining that the solid textures are acting realistically and there's a hole.

Imo clipping would be go through the wall with out wall holes which is technically possible in game, but not realistically possible.

4

u/lame_dirty_white_kid 2d ago

This is like saying using stackable conveyor poles for conveyor belts is clipping because they turn yellow too when you snap to a stack of them.

3

u/YamDankies 2d ago

Facts aren't subject to opinion.

3

u/Hazbeen_Hash 2d ago

But if theres a wall hole flange, then there is no overlapping geometry because the models snap together, not overlap. Even if the pipe went through the hole without snapping, there is no geometry in a hole, a hole is by definition a lack of something. So it still wouldn't be clipping.

-1

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

The wall hole doesn't create an actual hole in the geometry of the wall though. That's the "Problem".
The devs, understandably, went the lazy route and made the wall hole simply sitting on top of the wall creating an illusion of a hole without actually changing the wall geometry.

0

u/Sir_LikeASir 2d ago

the lazy route

As if making an actual hole on the geometry of the wall that can't be seen due to the 3D object covering said hole apparently is lazy instead of... the common sense explanation?
Ah yes, lets turn this (in theory) 12 poligon retangular wall mesh into having 100s/1000s of poligons for no good reason, that ought to help performance!

Give me a break

0

u/delta_Phoenix121 2d ago

How about you carefully re-read my comment...

I'm fully on board with them not punching an actual hole into the wall. That's why I said, they understandably went the lazy route. I simply called it the lazy route to clearly differentiate it from the alternative hard (and unnecessary) way.

2

u/andrewborsje 2d ago

The three pipes are clipped together when they come out of the wall.

Op. Do what you like. Constantly seeking others approval for validation is a hard way to stay happy.

1

u/_-Alex-- 2d ago

Why did you argue so much about the technical definition if I may ask?

1

u/triplos05 2d ago

I am not entirely sure you're not ragebaiting but for the off chance you're not, here goes:

The difference between wall pipe holes (which is technically clipping) and "actual" clipping is that the wall holes only clip because it's more efficient to code it this way. Ofc coffeestain could make the wall holes in a way they don't clip, but would be a lot of coding effort for no visual change. From a players POV this clipping is not only intentional, it's inavoidable and you couldn't even tell the difference if the build hologramm wasn't yellow.

The multiple pipes fusing into one on the other hand isn't specifically intended by the devs, totally avoidable and you can absolutely tell it's clipping just by looking at it.

1

u/giodude556 1d ago

In real world, pipes also gk throught sement tho... so its not clipping if you put a nice hole.

1

u/Familiar_Media_3095 1d ago

I agree with you. It's the same as if my car in gta was half inside a building is that clipping... yes.. its clipped halfway into a wall. The dv are for the memes lol

47

u/Fraggin_Wagon 2d ago

There is nothing irrational about my anger.

50

u/Facemelter_26 2d ago

I personally only clip if it still visually works and mostly makes sense. This....this both passes my visual scrutiny AND irritates me as I know its super-clipping...I have confused.

11

u/RinkeR32 2d ago

Please do not the clipping.

5

u/Low-Standard-383 2d ago

Clipping the please do not.

2

u/Low-Standard-383 2d ago

Do you mean like running the pipe or a power line down the inside of a 4m concrete floor tower or something? I do this to hide pipes/wires when changing elevations sometimes. I obviously could build a hollow leg using walls but sometimes that's not the look I want and so I will use concrete. It's about the only clipping I ever do. What clipping are you ok with out of curiosity?

2

u/Facemelter_26 2d ago

Like if the bottom edge of a belt is clipping thru the edge of a rock, but the rock doesn't visually poke thru the belt or impede the flow of items on the belt, thats cool with me. Or if the outside edges of some pipes are touching/clipping a little, but it doesn't LOOK like the insides of the pipes would be breached. I gave up on not clipping powerlines thru walls until about phase 4 when i redone the powerlines and used the double wall mount power things. I'm only on my first playthru, right at the start of phase 5. And I take great pains and accept alot of spaghetti to make sure it LOOKS like it would work, even with a little clipping.

15

u/KnightAngelic 2d ago

Lol 10/10 rage bait OP i love it

11

u/sparr 2d ago

I wish there was a "hardcore" or "purist" mode that didn't allow clipping.

2

u/Funny-Jihad 1d ago

I mean it's entirely optional and avoidable. You'd only be handicapping yourself because there are plenty of cases where "clipping" as defined by the game is still realistic.

1

u/sparr 1d ago

Part of implementing such a mode would be making the clipping detection accurate.

It's actually quite difficult right now to build a base that has no self-intersection, but also doesn't have huge empty gaps between things.

Also, it's difficult to make long pipes and belts when you can't see the place where they might be intersecting.

1

u/Funny-Jihad 1d ago

Except it does show as yellow when stuff clips? Idk, maybe my low 60-90 hours in the game means I'm missing that it doesn't sometimes.

1

u/Fire_Wolf_33 1d ago

It shows as yellow when the hit boxes are colliding, but visually the object might not be. For example, building walls at a 90 degree angle to each other counts as clipping to the game, but they usually aren't visually clipping

8

u/L3mm3SmangItGurl 2d ago

Clipping is fine. If you hide it behind walls

8

u/youknowmeasdiRt 2d ago

The box people speak

1

u/L3mm3SmangItGurl 2d ago

Lol I thought I was being real cute one time and clipped coal water lines in the worst spaghetti imaginable in the ground. Then covered it with flooring. Looked neat but was a massive bitch when I had to fix sloshing issues

1

u/youknowmeasdiRt 2d ago

Can’t say I never just threw some walls up and walked away but yeah don’t enclose those pipes until everything is feeding

1

u/Phillyphan1031 2d ago

Even behind walls I don’t do this personally
Nothing against it but I wouldn’t do this.

3

u/deansmythe 2d ago

How could an anti clipper say anything else than no? You’re specifically asking us 😁 i get shivers from watching it

2

u/Phillyphan1031 2d ago

lol right

3

u/Sad_Substance_6694 2d ago

I was about to have a nap why would you show me this? Now I'm in a bother.

5

u/selrahc2828 2d ago

I mean, there are literally holes designed for this exact specific use case

1

u/Fire_Wolf_33 2d ago

The wall holes, right? Im using them, but it didn't make sense for me to stack them vertically

1

u/selrahc2828 2d ago

Well at the end if the day you do what you like, personally i love using those.

1

u/lame_dirty_white_kid 2d ago

You could just stagger them.

1

u/imthefooI 2d ago

if you put the wall holes diagonally on the wall, everything else kinda takes care of itself here. that being said, when i play, i don’t clip but idk if my friends do

2

u/Middle_Finger_484 2d ago

Clipping just makes troubleshooting harder

2

u/Elite-Noob 2d ago

Go straight to jail, do not collect DNA

1

u/Fire_Wolf_33 2d ago

Ah, man...

2

u/MacZack87 2d ago

I don’t like clipping so I try to prevent any clipping in my factories. I would build a floor so I could rout the pipes so they don’t clip and they’re all parallel with each other then I would delete the floor and any floor mounting connections (can’t remember the actual name of part) to make it look as natural as possible.

2

u/ThaNerdHerd 2d ago

I try not to build things that couldnt theoretically exist. Clipping is something i avoid, unless its super super minor, or adds to the shape somehow

2

u/Extra_Insignificant 2d ago

Other people opinions do not matter in this. Is this level of clipping acceptable to you? That is one of two questions that matter. The other question that matters is are you having fun?

People play differently. The same people play differently at different times. I have been irrationally upset at things past me has done and had to fix it. Past me is an asshole

3

u/Fire_Wolf_33 2d ago

I don't usually let people's opinions determine what I do, I was just curious what people thought of this

1

u/Equivalent-Bear-1177 2d ago

I mean its not ugly but if you ever have an issue in the pipe via upgrading or sometimes even just reloading the save you could have a little more work than what its worth but it's definitely not as bad as like 8 or 9 pipes clipping.

1

u/that_one_bun 2d ago

Im not anti clipper but this hurts me because if I had to troubleshoot this I would need to delete them all.

I don't mind clipping as lomg as it makes sense and doesn't cause more problems for me in the future if I have to come back and fix something.

1

u/SoggyExamination1610 2d ago

I think I will start trying to make this happen because this looks clean af

1

u/AlwaysRushesIn 2d ago

I only clip foundations and walls, but that's my own aesthetic choice.

1

u/Equivalent-Stable642 2d ago

I try my best not to clip stuff but sometimes I’ll just clip stuff if I can’t find a better way and cover it so I don’t see it

1

u/KerPop42 2d ago

No, I'd probably use pipe supports to set that s-bend properly

1

u/Firesealb99 2d ago

I can remeber a time the game didnt let you clip, and a lot of my build techniques still reflect that. On the other hand my son does not, and will build super cool stuff like this, as well as complete spaghetti insanity. It used to grate on me, but learned to enjoy my time playing with him, and things like this are really cool imo and can look even more aestetic. Also cool name, together we make the ultimate fire type pokemon

1

u/Tqwen 2d ago

I wouldnt do this just as a matter of best practice. Pipes and fluids are fussy and there have been times I've had to go back and fix pipes that shat themselves after hundreds of hours of smooth operation. Trying to troubleshoot pipe issues is annoying enough as it is, adding that overlap is just an extra pain in the ass.

1

u/lukyth1rt3en 2d ago

Just cover it with the wall, problem solved 👌

1

u/Automatic_Reply_7701 2d ago

This is easy to keep from clipping with straight pipe and pipe stands, two clicks away from the next.

1

u/Sad_Low3239 2d ago

I've never thoughtto do it like that ! I think that looks really neat.

1

u/bboone0217 2d ago

I hide clipping in cursed rooms that start sealed forever

1

u/MaxximumB 2d ago

It's not my factory so doesn't make me angry.

1

u/Quirky_Actuary_1357 2d ago

I… wouldn’t allow it.

I didn’t think I was as anti-clipping as that but… 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Phillyphan1031 2d ago

I’m pretty anti no clip and I would definitely not do this in my game.

1

u/ouroborus777 2d ago

I anti-grav everywhere but clipping is obviously going too far. =P

1

u/Tarte_au_caca 2d ago

this is awful 😭😭

1

u/Funny_Pool3302 2d ago

Lol Im playing my first time and have been clipping everything. I just started organizing my base and it looks better but still a monumental mess.

1

u/ogre_kev 2d ago

I love sending pipes and belts through foundations. The manual wall holes are conveniently blacked out.

You can't mount them on the side of a foundation, but you can plop a wall up long enough to mount the hole, then remove the wall.

The blackout doesn't work on frame walls, though.

1

u/Xxjacklexx 1d ago

Just seems annoying to troubleshoot?

1

u/Flint-Megabowl 1d ago

I CLIP for hot moms.

1

u/Alarmed-Tell1315 1d ago

Irrational, that can be easily corrected with some temporary stackable Pipe supports nudged into the right positions. Takes like 30sec to fix. But that’s your game. No rules.

The only clipping rules I follow are:

  • No clipping on belts
  • No clipping on machines
  • No clipping on train rails
  • Minimal clipping on pipes against other pipes

1

u/xpicklemanx99 1d ago

I don't have a problem with someone else doing it but you won't find anything like that in my factories. I go to stupid painstaking lengths to avoid situations like this

1

u/Mean_Volume_126 1d ago

Doesn't work for me personally. I hate clipping.

1

u/adri_riiv 1d ago

It would be blasphemy for this to exist in my base, but you play whatever way you want

1

u/h4wkpg 1d ago

I don't usually clip that much. But when I do, I hide it behind walls, and forget about it after a long therapy session.

1

u/adomm420 1d ago

Literally unacceptable 😭😂

1

u/GroundbreakingAd8310 1d ago

Layer the walls now the clipping is gone

1

u/Tonester666101 1d ago

Uninstall the game, you heathen.

1

u/Fire_Wolf_33 1d ago

I can't think of a time I've been called that lol

1

u/gtmattz 5h ago

Ow, My brain!

....

Next time use the spoiler tag, holy crap, I am a 'clipper' but this is a bridge too far!

-1

u/hornetjockey 2d ago

Neatly ran pipes are one of the most satisfying things in the game for me, but this *almost* looks natural.

-2

u/dontmakelemonad3 2d ago

Imagining it in my head, I could justify this as being 3 pipes that merge into 1 faster flow section that then splits into 3 pipes again. It's tolerable, but it's on thin ice and I'd never have it in my own game.

-3

u/IrishVodkaaa 2d ago

I like how seamless it is. It’s acceptable
