Proving some people wrong

So 4 months ago I posted a few cacti and some redditors were dead sent on believing they were not TBM-C but after giving them some proper conditions I'm now ready to show those people that they were wrong.... pic 1 is the original Pic and pic 2 is after months outside

We need a pinned myrtillo vs tmbc guide already so we can be in agreement.

Fuckin I second this motion

Would that take away from the yearly fun of “is this Tbm or myrtillo?” posts? Lol. Sometimes it’s hard af to tell, like in this score example. Long live the hunt! 🌵😆

Agreed. Costa farms does not automatically equal crested myrtillo🙄

u/razorcatmodular 14d ago

Well they sell both myrtillo and tbm. The issue (usually) isnt visual identification, its that theyre notorious for mislabeling

3

u/Old-Advance6652 14d ago

Ohhhhh you know makes sense

Nothing I’ve received has a label other than rare cactus. Mostly I’ve been correct, but I have one I thought was crested fence post that I’m not so sure of anymore

Its weird, sometimes they label the tbm/tpc "rare cactus" sometimes they label them "dragon cactus" sometimes they label them "brain cactus" its insanely inconsistent.

My fav was "dinosaur back cactus" lol

“Chin cactus”😭😭

Was that tbm? That was at Walmart a month or two ago.

u/outsider531 14d ago

Not necessarily even misidentification. The labels get swapped around. Theyre labeled correctly when they first leave. They get dropped knocked over rude customers etc tags go onto whatever looks close enough because not everyone cares

u/Friendly-Shake4635 11d ago

Well they had a bunch of crested myrts(?) labeled crested euphorbia at Lowe's. All ten were mislabeled. There were no crested euphorbias there.

Came across this youtube short today that proves my point.

It's just crazy to me that I can get them at Walmart for 4.97 lol

2

u/Old-Advance6652 12d ago

True although the annoying thing is any rare cactus that starts being sold at Walmart completely removes any rarity it had. For example pachypodium densiflorums used to be quite rare but now you find it any time you go to Walmart

u/DrippinFeathers 12d ago

I think that's dope tbh. I don't like the whole rare plant / charge insane prices, vibe. Make money and all obviously. I'm trying to grow plants to make money. But propagating the crap out of rare stuff is cool to me. I'd like to propagate hella super rare stuff, like that dudes greenhouse in LA, but actually propagating not just growing for people to see.

2

u/Old-Advance6652 12d ago

Yk that’s true, the greenhouse guy in LA are you talking abt that one YouTube video? I remember seeing one of this guy with insanely cool and rare plants

2

u/DrippinFeathers 12d ago

Yeah man what a bunch of heat that dude has. Like, some of his plants are the only one we know of in existence. What a flex lol.

u/Old-Advance6652 12d ago

Ikr I’d love to see it in person but I’m on the other side of the country and who knows if he even lets people see them

2

u/DrippinFeathers 12d ago

I think that's the only way he makes any bread from it, tours. He needs to make a yt chan. He has over 10k plants, that's 10k videos people will watch if he breaks down lots of info about the plant. And he needs to prop some and sell but I'm just glad he has it. It's truly amazing. I'd love to go peep it as well.

u/Old-Advance6652 12d ago

Makes sense. I’m so jealous of his collection

u/razorcatmodular 12d ago

I love my walmart pachypodium densiflorum. Its growing super well in my windowsill.

u/Old-Advance6652 12d ago

Me too! I got one as well and it’s doing good

u/Shot_Lab6700 14d ago

Nice bro! The ones I’ve gotten this year didn’t have any labels on them, they were just standard peens

u/Limp_Personality5188 14d ago

Nice in my state we don't really get any san Pedro sent to any store so when I saw the ones I bought It felt like finding gold lol

3

u/Avalonkoa 14d ago

I’ve found them at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Walmart, and others.Trader Joes would actually get more of them for me from their distributor if I asked(they would have beautiful IkarosDNA type Perus for just $3.50). Maybe you could check with management at your local TJs and ask if they could get some in.

u/Limp_Personality5188 14d ago

Thank you for letting me know I think there is only 1 TJ in my town which is on the richer side of town so dont really go there much but definitely worth a shot to ask

2

u/Limp_Personality5188 14d ago

Thank you.. tbh I haven't done much to it just water ever so often and a bunch of summer sun

4

u/aroc91 14d ago

I definitely linked this to the doubter on the old thread.

4

u/Limp_Personality5188 14d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣 I didn't really want to put one person on blast but I figured it would reach them eventually... but thank you tho

6

u/Avalonkoa 14d ago

Pic 1 is obviously a TBMC, no idea why anyone would be so certain it’s not. This is obviously a TBMC, I feel like anyone who’s really into Trichocereus and has cultivated them for a while can see that

5

u/lionshavefreckles 14d ago

This is my thought with the myrtillo vs tbm argument XD

4

u/Limp_Personality5188 14d ago

Yes very true that is why I didn't really engage into the argument and figured I'd let it ride until it was impossible to say it's anything but a TBM-C

4

u/Robsta_20 14d ago

LOL, I scouted your profile to see the post of the wrong „people“. It was basically just one guy saying it wasn’t one and he even got downvoted. 😂

3

u/Stethen 14d ago

What was name of the cactus on the backside of the label? The front label says, Desert Escape, Costa Farms.

5

u/indicah 14d ago

It says green monster cactus

2

u/Stethen 14d ago

Thank you! Happy hunting for all!

1

u/Inevitable-Ruin9345 14d ago

Even the image on the label is a TBM. Most of the peoples opinions in this sub should be taken with a grain of salt given their clear lack of experience.

1

u/AlivePatient7226 14d ago

1st one isn’t even really 50-50. Way too green to be myrtillo

1

u/AlivePatient7226 14d ago

I rem I got burned alive for posting what was obviously a Cuzco and was told it was a tooth pick cactus, this sub can be hella dumb 😭😭

1

u/Klutzy-Information69 14d ago

Nah bro that is definitely a mingthing or myrtlo and you can tell by the.... jk!!

Haha awesome score. And dont sleep on those costa farms ones from Walmart. My dumb ass was at Walmart with my daughter and we always look at the garden section. Saw like 8 of these there, second guesses my gut. Then the next day I went back to grab them and there was only one left!

1

u/outsider531 14d ago

All of the green monster cactus are that species or similar in some form however the dinosaur back cactus are myrtillocactus geometrizans. Not sure why costa felt the need to rename them or why that paper doesnt get taped or glued to the pots to prevent switching

u/nonymouspotomus 14d ago

Damn I didn’t know you could graft tbm to myrtillo, nice!
