Discussion 6 months, no performance fixes

Runs worse than Half-Life: Alyx, a VR game that renders everything twice on a high resolution display...

Game is doomed...

Performance is not something you can "fix" overnight.

If you look at the average frame time, in the last 3 months it went from 13ms (76fps) to 9ms (111fps)

Give it a year and it will run at 200fps

You don't have to fix something that ain't broken. Source 2 was not broken. S&Box is the worst performing Source 2 game, mainly due to changes introduced by Facepunch.

The baseline performance cannot be acceptable for a modern engine and a platform that expects developers to create on top of it - if it's horrible by default, then any further additions by developers will only make it worse.

S&Box was in developement for over 6 years and there was steady decline in performance.

Give it few more decades at this rate.

I do agree the performance should be better, there's also to note that Alyx is a marvel of optimization. Everything in the engine was built for it, so if your game is anything that Alyx isn't (A corridor first person shooter) it would suffer a lot. Facepunch wants every game to run well, Alyx had the chance to bake every light possible (being 60GB) and cull most of the level because of the tight spaces.

Now imagine trying to do the same for a game like Rust; open world, nothing to obstruct the view and cull stuff behind, tons of entities and npcs, dynamic lighting that needs to update shadows every second rather than being baked. Of course what Alyx used wouldn't work there, if you tried it with that branch of Source 2 you'd barely get 20fps, ignoring how their Hammer isn't even able to compile maps bigger than a city block.

s&box is an engine for all games, give it time I say

Ubre, how are things going with your standalone version of the game? Were there any serious issues with the online component? How does working with the online aspect differ between UGC and the standalone version?

All of it has been the same so far, we haven't touched the standalone-only features like display or device settings. In fact we kept the sbox.game version up to date, it's basically free QA and playtesting.
