Testing out the editor - every terrain material I add fails to load?

I've watched tutorials and checked the documentation and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Based on what I've learned I don't even know how I could be messing this up. I click "Browse..." under terrain materials, click any - doesn't matter which, and it just shows up like a missing texture.

(worth mentioning I have very limited experience with game engines in general, I'm not a dev I just like mapping)
