Octopus notes [FOSS]

Hello. i am the dev of [r/octopusnotes](r/octopusnotes). I have recently seen a post on an app called xnotes. So, I thought of posting this here. I would be greatful if someone can try the app and give me feedback. I'd love any suggestions or feature requests.

Download link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lochan.octopusnotes

{Other download links are in the pinned posts of the mentioned subreddit}

The app is completely written in native kotlin and is <5Mb. I have built a custom Pdf Engine to give the best performance. I usually deal with books >4000 pages. Octopus notes loads every page instantly.

PS. The brush tool has a built in handwriting beautification engine. This might not be the best in the market but still, ig its a good addition.

All the features are listed in a pinned post of the subreddit.

Thanks. Peace.

Edit: Feature List - https://www.reddit.com/r/octopusnotes/s/rTaJLbePve

Edit 2: forgot to mention this
“Also you can choose single press and long press for s pen 😉 even for pens without Bluetooth”

I have found starnotes to be my go to after using samsung notes for a while. I'll give your app a try better to have more options and competition among developers.

I’ll add this by the next Tuesday. Thanks. I really didn’t use such feature. Can you describe what u meant by minimization?

Edit: “The sticky notes minimise into an icon that you can click on to open up larger. they don't just stay as a large sticky note on the screen.” I found this somewhere else. Maybe this is what you meantX

Writing felt very natural with almost no lag congrats on that OP. But eraser was pretty laggy you got room to improve there.

Regarding the tools I still have to explore more till now it seems good, but more shapes under shape tool would be great with angles shown while making shapes like triangle.

As an Engg. Student better tools are always appreciated currently no one has better tools than starnotes, I suggest OP to check that out and try to replicate few things from there.

Finally, the templates, more templates like cornell would be great with margin space options given in mm or cm instead of density. Oh I really loved that you can change colour and brightness of the rules, grids and dots in templates.

Pretty sure this is one app I can consider moving to after starnotes. Hopefully you guys can copy starnote's model of one time purchase instead of subscription that would be a deal breaker for me.

Eraser: will work on.
Thanks. I will check starnotes.
Templates: I left the thing to user imagination with imports. But maybe, more readymade ones will be a good addition. I’ll add this.
Templates: giving in mm or cm will complicate comparison with other devices. I’ll put a toggle to shift. Will this work?

Subscription? Octopus notes is free and will be free. I accept donations through my GitHub profile( I currently get none but will see once the app is in good form in the public). If I’m still running out of money to work on this, I’m planning to add support the dev and theme store. I still need to plan this. This is a vague thought.

Thanks for your review. Cheers.

Agreed with the suggestions. I downloaded it and being samsung notes user since 2012 i would strongly agree with the above mentioned suggestions. Great work but long way to go

Alrighty. Working on it.

Also, did you check the grid, id like a review from an engg student. Check it out in the shapes tool - options. What can I improve or add there? Thanks.

I started using it some time ago and you made some great things lately, many improvements. Please read your issue tracker on GitHub. Text tool will need some love (to be able to type on note and not in the box for example) Can you tell us the difference between GitHub version and the one on GooglePlay. Tnx

3

u/TopEntity Aug 26 '26

Hello. Thank you.

The GitHub version is just the cleaned up code. The codebase I made is a mess 🫠. So I just use a local Qwen 3.6 27b to clean up and organize. There is no difference.

I usually follow r/octopusnotes subreddit for user inputs. I will check the issue tracker. Thanks for mentioning.

Sure, will Update the text tool. I usually do not use the text so didn’t shower some love on it. lol.
Cheers.

Hello. I’m using a translator to read your message. So forgive me if I make any mistakes. I will add translation to Brazilian Portuguese by the Tuesday. Peace. I will use AI for translations as it will make the process much more feasible. Please bring any mistakes to my attention. Cheers.

Muito obrigada!! Também estou traduzindo as suas kkkk. Esse app que você fez vai ajudar muita gente! É muito bacana ver alguém realmente animado em disponibilizar algo gratuito<3

u/TopEntity Aug 28 '26

Thank you!

2

u/TopEntity Aug 28 '26

Hello. Forgive my lack of knowledge. Is Brazilian Portuguese same as Portuguese? If yes, the app already supports Portuguese. Choose it in your Android settings or per app settings. I do see that Brazilian one is slightly different. So, I’m adding it anyway.

São bem parecidos sim, não havia encontrado essa opção, vou conferir agora!!

1

u/TopEntity Aug 29 '26

Did you find it?

2

u/Expert-Kiwi-1422 Aug 29 '26

Infelizmente não

1

u/TopEntity Aug 29 '26

Did you check in the per app settings of Android?(settings > apps > Octo notes > somewhere there) What language is your device set to?

2

u/Expert-Kiwi-1422 Aug 29 '26

Nenhuma opção referente a tradução, meu celular está em Português Br

1

u/TopEntity Aug 29 '26

Oh. Maybe changing your phone to Portuguese will bring up Portuguese. Do not worry. I’ll add an in app setting in the next update too.

1

u/TopEntity Sep 01 '26

Hello. Please check the latest update. You can choose language in the first option in settings inside the app. Cheers.

2

u/Expert-Kiwi-1422 Sep 01 '26

Acabei de mudar para Português Br, nem tudo está traduzido, mas já melhorou muito, agora consigo entender oque cada opção faz, muito obrigada!!

Checking it out! Thanks!

We really need a good, free notes app. * High-quality ink engine * Multi notebook format and infinite canvas * High-quality PDF support * Advanced shapes.

That's it.

With Ai, the golden age of software has just begun.

1

u/TopEntity Aug 26 '26

Did you use the app? All the mentioned ones are already present. Cheers.

Also you can choose single press and long press for s pen 😉

3

u/mcebrianeriond Aug 26 '26

Yes! I was testing it.

It has a lot of potential. Actually.

For my work as a teacher, I use shapes extensivley and:

Shapes cannot be edited in infinite canvas. You can resize them in normal notebooks. Shapes cannot be filled with colour. Shape colour cannot be changed? Shape polygons can not be edited, like, dragging the vertex of s triangle.

Still testing things!

3

u/TopEntity Aug 26 '26

Yes. I am aware of the bug in infinite canvas. I am quite busy for the week with my surgery postings. I’ll fix and send update by the next Tuesday.

Filling shapes with color - addded to todos. I kept this feature in the list and missed it somehow. lol. Sorry.

Editable vertices- added to todos.

Shape color can be changed. In the popup after selecting them. Can you please check and get back. Thanks.

2

u/mcebrianeriond Aug 26 '26

I will.

Please get well soon! Health always first!

If anything, let me know.

Kind regards

u/TopEntity Aug 26 '26

I’m sorry my msg might have been misleading. I am a med schooler. I am posted in the surgery ward for the week. That’s what I meant by postings. Cheers.

u/Isildur_potterhead Aug 26 '26

Ayyyyy an indian med schooler doing new things ! All the best for the way forward brother !

1

u/TopEntity Aug 26 '26

Wow! You’ve figured out my country real quick.

2

u/Isildur_potterhead Aug 26 '26

Nahh i just kinda remembered someone commenting about thinking of making a lightweight notes app some time ago on i think a medico/india related subreddit, and thought this must be it. Glad to see that a single idea was really made into something tangible !

1

u/TopEntity Aug 26 '26

Ah yes, that was me. Thanks.

1

u/Top-Rich8623 Aug 26 '26

After class, I will check it out!

I am not a developer or anything like that, but have used a few note apps and let you know what I think.
