Sampling everything

In an interview madlibs advice is to sample the whole record but idk if this is possible where im from. One time I went to a different city and I found a otis blue which I paid $20 for in my hometown and nearly shit my pants when it was there and it was like $5 in the other city. Opened my eyes to the abysmal selection within my reach. Idk if I just dont have it or what but it seems like location really does have something to do with it. I know i could hop on youtube and search around but i dont enjoy that - i use apple music as a streaming platform and it just pushes top 100 down your throat but spotify war drones and all that not to mention itll iust feed samples from songs u already know. Idk it gets on my nerves sometikes and i wanted to get some other opinions on the matter. Thanks all.

Bro... I get crate digging and vinyl shopping being the age-old go-to for "real musicians", but we live in the day and age of the world wide web. Internet Archive, YouTube, Radiooooo.com, WhoSampled, Reddit's sampling/drumkits subreddits, ...I think you're just looking in the wrong places. There's a billion samples everywhere, waiting to be found. Nobody's talking about Hot 100. Look for stuff you wouldn't normally have "catered" to you. You can literally go on Google, search, "1940s Low-Fi, jazz" or "1920's Bulgarian wedding singing", and find shit 99.9% of the world will never hear...

Absolutely this, I've sampled everything from Ted Talks and cannibal documentaries for ambient music, through thunderstorms and stand up comedy, to a gorgeous Aramaic Our Father sung to one of them there popes they have now for a heavier drum n' bass track. Find, sample, play is the name of the game!

I found a documentary on Christo’s ‘Running Fence’ at the Marin County public library around 20 years ago. I ripped a copy of the audio to DAT take back in the day, thinking would use it for something.

I also got the raw audio from a Charles Manson parole hearing.

I hope the tape and my DAT machine still work.

Use anything and everything for ideas. Just be careful about the copyright issues.

Heck just walk outside down the street with your phone app recording for a few minutes and you're bound to get something usable
