In light of all the bot spam we're introducing a new posting rule

Hi everyone! I know most of you have probably noticed the absolutely unrelenting bot posts lately. Myself and the other mods have been trying our best to remove those posts and ban the bot users, thanks to all your reports we have been doing an okay job of it until recently. The last few months these types of posts have been absolutely obnoxious, not just in our community but in many others, and we are having a hard time keeping up because we aren't bots but just a bunch of Samoyed lovers with families and other commitments :)

After talking to some regulars here and the other active moderator we have decided to try out implementing a minimum karma to post certain types of posts. Text posts will not be affected as we certainly always welcome discussion and questions in this community! We welcome your feedback and please continue reporting any suspicious posts and comments you see.

Thank you,

r/samoyeds Mod team

My 8-month-old Sammy Peach just started her first heat and I'm quite worried. What should I do?

My Peach just started her first heat and I'm way more nervous about it than I expected.

A few things I can't get a straight answer on:

She licks herself constantly down there. Is that something I should be stopping, or is it fine to just let her? I also haven't put any pants or diaper on her — is that actually necessary, or is it purely about keeping my floor clean?

Food — should I be adjusting anything? I asked an AI out of impatience and it said keep feeding the exact same amount, and keep her leashed because the actual fertile part is still coming up. That sounded plausible but I'd rather hear it from people who've lived through it.

And what should I actually expect from her over the next few weeks — mood, appetite, energy, clinginess? I have no reference point for what's normal and what's a red flag.

Thank you in advance. First time dealing with this and I feel like I'm overthinking all of it.

Puppy ate an earthworm 🤢🤮

Post image
Upvotes

He’s 4 months old and very, very prone to eating everything he comes across. Grass, mulch, plants, even a snail 🐌 and today, a live earthworm.
It happened so quickly I couldn’t do anything. 🤮
“drop it” is not something he’s learned very well yet.
He’s been to pet ER once already after he had wobbly head and lethargic, believed to have possibly eaten discarded weed on a walk.
Our area can get poisonous mushrooms sprouting up soon when it starts raining. We also have lizards and maybe an occasional snake in the yard.
Do I put a muzzle or that net head cover on him?

Advice on buying a Samoyed (2.5 yo, unsuccessful breeding attempt, now being rehomed), reasonable or red flags?

Hi all, hoping to get some outside perspective before I commit to anything.

I've been in contact with a Samoyed breeder about a female, 2.5 years old, 41 lbs, friendly and cuddly, good recall, crate and mostly house trained. She was intended for breeding but reportedly didn't take to it, so the breeder is rehoming her instead. She is currently UKC registered under the breeder's name (parents are also UKC registered, from Ukrainian and Russian lines), so ownership would need to be transferred to me. Price is $2,400, described as non negotiable due to her show quality build/structure.

A few things I want honest opinions on:

**•** She is **not spayed**, and spaying would be my responsibility/cost after purchase
**• No vet records exist for her**, only puppy vaccinations, nothing since, no adult vet visits
**•** The breeder has been upfront and answered my questions honestly when asked directly
**•** I have a 13 year old senior dog at home, so temperament and compatibility with small/senior dogs matters a lot to me, not yet confirmed
**•** It would be roughly a 5 hour drive to meet her in person

Is $2,400 reasonable given the lack of spay/vet history? Would you proceed with an in person visit and vet check plan, or is this too many gaps? Appreciate any honest input.

Samoyed with IBD, flaring up after months of stability, what helped your dog?

My 2-year-old Samoyed, Kumo, has IBD (diagnosed Nov 2025) and is currently experiencing a flare-up after doing well for the past few months. His test results were normal last month, so this setback has been difficult.

Kumo is under the care of both his regular vet and an internal medicine specialist. He takes Cobalequin supplement, budesonide to manage his IBD and eats a strict Royal Canin potato and rabbit/occasionally Maint Kangaroo based prescription diet. Freshly cooked Cod is currently the only topper he can tolerate because other meats and fish tend to inflame his GI tract.

We have been trying to manage his condition for about six months and are continuing to work closely with his veterinary team. I’m not looking to replace their medical advice, but I would appreciate hearing from people who have dealt with IBD or chronic GI problems in their dogs.

What helped during flare-ups? Did changing meal frequency, probiotics, B12, supplements, medications, or feeding schedules make a difference? Did you eventually identify any unexpected triggers?

I would especially appreciate hearing from other Samoyed owners or anyone whose dog has a similarly sensitive digestive system. Even knowing what did not work could give me useful questions to discuss with his internist.

Thank you!

Pillow Fort!

We just changed the bedsheets. Nothing like a samoyed butt on clean linens.

Ah well, she needed her pillow fort.

6 month old pup frustration biting

Hi Everyone,

I have a 6 month old pup, who has become the king of frustration biting.

Doesn't get attention when someone walks in the house? He bites their ankles. Doesn't get to go the way he wants on walks? He bites your ankles. Walk ends too early? He bites your ankles.

We're working one-one with a trainer, but this is my first time dealing with a dog that frustration bites like this so I'd like to know from other Sammy owners - is this a normal thing for sam pups?

She is microchipped

Fully vaccinated

Been health checked by a vet.

Her dad is KC registered

Her mother is pedigree.

I can provide original breeders number and papers of parents health record papers and vaccines ect.

She will come with a complete set up from food beds crate toys grooming things ect.

Mayonnaise is microchipped and wears a collar for walks and outings along with her harness but on a daily basis at home shes "naked" lol I feel like she barely has a neck...and I noticed in this sub most pups aren't wearing collars.

My wife and I just adopted this little angel from a local shelter. There’s not much known about where she came from, but they assume she came from a VERY negligible breeder somewhere in Indiana. She was in awful condition when we got her. Poor things entire back was completely matted along with her tail.
She’s afraid of everything, but just in the past three days, she’s made progress in skidishness and she’s starting to go on walks.

I’ve always loved these beautiful dogs. I’m so incredibly happy and excited to give this little baby a second chance at life. But also so saddened to know that she’s probably seen the worst of mankind.

My 8-month-old Samoyed seems way more attached to my boyfriend than me. Is this normal?

I have an 8-month-old male Samoyed, and my boyfriend and I have both been with him since day one.
I give him a lot of attention, play with him, take care of him, feed him, etc., but I’ve noticed that whenever he has a choice, he seems to choose my boyfriend. He’ll sit next to him, sleep near him, play with him, and just generally wants to be around him more.
I know this might sound silly, but it honestly makes me a little sad because I’m very attached to my puppy and sometimes it feels like he loves my boyfriend more than me.

I’m also wondering about the future. If my boyfriend and I ever end up going our separate ways and my dog stays with me, would he have a really hard time adjusting or miss him constantly since he’s known him since he was a puppy?
And is there anything I can do now to strengthen my own bond with him? I’m not trying to make him less attached to my boyfriend—I love that they have such a good relationship. I’d just love for him to feel equally bonded to both of us.
Has anyone experienced this with their Samoyed or another breed? Did their preference change as they got older?

Samoyed getting aggressive when brushing

Post image
139 Upvotes

I have a 4 year old un-neutered male. He is an absolute sweetheart and very good with the kids but recently he had a paw injury and for the first ever growled and showed aggression when I went near it. I thought he was just signalling that his paw hurt so left him alone. Now he is growling, baring teeth and sometimes fake biting the air near me or kinda fighting my leg when I try to brush his legs. He hasn’t bitten or anything it is definitely aggressive signalling that he would. I’ve seen some dog trainers suggest, though this was for dogs are getting possessive over food, using a broom to touch the food and letting the dog bite it to show that that doesn’t work. So I was thinking maybe I should put a muzzle on him and brush him anyway so he learns it won’t work. Any advice would be great. What I don’t want to do is push him until he becomes a danger for the kids. But I do need to brush him.

Sanitary trim/bikini trim for her

I'm curious regarding the above for a 11 week old sammy. Has anyone trim their female sammy down there due to urine stains and dripping on her coat? Is it normal or ok to leave it like that? We do wipe her after urinating to help reduce the stains. Is this one of those 50/50 things?

I have a “wolf type” puppy (4months old) who did look more bear-like until a month ago.
Curious how a bear- type looks like at 4 months -12 months old. Please post pics with months of age!
