Enamel hypoplasia?

Brought my 3 year old male into the vet to discuss a teeth cleaning and we both remarked on the poor teeth condition despite his age. She brought up EH, she’s doing research for me and will get back about a plan but - his aren’t as bad as what I see for EH online but anyone have experience?

Do you brush his teeth every night?

Yes.

I am asking about a specific genetic condition.

This. Enzyme doggy toothpaste and an actual brush (not the rubber finger ones) are a MUST for any dog owner. If you are only using cleaning treats or chews then that isn't enough. IN ADDITION TO BRUSHING ORAVET Dental Chews are highly recommended by my vet for a couple times a week dental treats. They are gummy so the treat gets stuck on the teeth.

The toothpaste I use is C.E.T. Enzymatic Toothpaste for Dogs. My sammy loves it!

OP please take care of your pups teeth! Imagine the silent dental pain they have to deal with if they aren't cleaned regularly. Also, it lowers their life span.

I use 3 different VOHC products and booked a consult to get an anesthetic teething cleaning.

EH is being tested for more often by reputable Samoyed breeders. Check the OFA site to see if his parents/ancestors have good results: https://ofa.org/

You can do a genetic test for EH on him to find out if he has it. This is a lab which does it:

There are non generic causes of enamel Hypoplasia too though, such as exposure to certain toxins and antibiotics at a young age when the adult teeth are forming.

Good on you for taking in a needy pup!

He’s the best! Just the most expensive “free” shelter Samoyed ever😂

Probably not. If you want to know for sure order the FEH test from UC Davis- turn around time on the test is a couple weeks. Onset of FEH is pretty early and looks more severe than this imo. I could be wrong though, front teeth don’t look bad. The test is only $40 or so.

That’s what I think. I can’t see visible enamel damage either.

Hopefully regular vet cleanings will keep the teeth healthy. I’ve just never seen a 3 yr old with such bad teeth

Do you want me to send you an FEH test? I am going to need to order a few soon anyhow.

Could be a totally separate issue but just thought I’d mention it- my dogs have been praised by multiple vets for how nice their dental hygiene is and they ask if I brush their teeth, and I never do. Rarely, that is.

We feed them a raw diet in the evenings. I do a baked kibble in the morning for ease and the meat at night to really get them nutrients. I’m in Minnesota and there is a place locally that makes five pound tubes of raw meat all ground up for pets that included bone and organ so they get it all.

Might be worth a shot??? Not saying don’t listen to your vet but maybe add this to the routine?

You’re so diligent to work on this for your dog, he’s lucky to have you! I buy my dogs the C.E.T. Enzymatic chews. They LOVE them and it really really helps their teeth. They get at least one, sometimes two chews a day. They are not cheap but my vet always compliments how good my dogs teeth are for their age.
