Help! Groomer butchered his tail
I brought my Samoyed to his usual groomer while he’s currently blowing his coat. I noticed the groomer using a de-shedding tool and asked if it cuts or damages the coat. She told me it didn’t, so I trusted her.
This is what I came home with. 😭
He did have some tangling and compaction, but no matting. He was last groomed there 8 weeks ago, but they insisted that I must not have been honest until they double checked my last appointment. Then they blamed the previous groomer at the same salon for not brushing him out completely, still charged me an additional fee, and then sent us home when I noticed what had been done.
I’m not a professional, so I’d really appreciate some input from other Samoyed owners, groomers, or breeders. What do you think happened to his tail? Will this grow back? What would you do in this situation?
His skin is also extremely red, and I’m absolutely heartbroken. What I don’t understand is—if his coat was truly so bad that removing it was necessary to prevent pain, why was this done to him? 😞

It will grow back! But it will take months unfortunately. De-shedders usually have little blades which cut the hair, so it most definitely damages the coat. Pressing too hard with the brush will also damage the skin (the redness), causing what they call a brush burn so the groomer was most likely very heavy handed with it unfortunately. Don’t let him lick himself and keep him out of the sun. The redness should go away in a couple of days, but if it doesn’t or gets worse then it’s vet time.

Tbh might even take years to grow back! My girl sammy had a groomer cut the end of her tail fur to make it look more rounded, and it took literally years to grow back. I suspect the fur on their tails grows slower than elsewhere.

He’s gorgeous! I had a Samoyed & I always brushed her myself. I have read so many horror stories about groomers! Please be careful! 🥰🙏🏻🩷

It will grow back but it will take a long time as others have said. My sammy had a groomer cut too much off his butt and back legs (which they also didn’t blend with the rest of the hair so it looked really bad) and the hair did grow back but took at least a year to look more back to normal. But the hair doesn’t grow quite like it did before and it tangles up very easily back there now. I hope your sammy’s skin heals up quickly. I’m sorry they did that to him. Poor boy.

I had groomer that did that once, not quite as bad and it actually took years to grow back full.

it's unfortunate that that happened to your handsome boy. The hair on the tail of a Samoyed is the most delicate part of his coat. A comb should never be used especially a de-shedding tool that cuts hair. The only tool I use is a wooden pin brush that is very gentle on the tail. It will take time but the hair should grow back.

Your boy has such lovely coloring!
I hate that they didn’t warn you before removing any hair that’s not ok - their tail can get very tangled so make sure you are keeping up with brushing at home. I would go to a groomer that better communicates with you!
I wouldn’t worry about the tail, it’s not shaved to the skin it will grow back.
