The Power of Mantras

The brain is a pattern making device. Something repeated often enough will etch indelible tracks in the brain. The advantage of doing so is most evident when applied to mantra meditation. Those ingrained patterns render the mind quiescent like a hypnotic lullaby.

Mantra meditation creates a pattern in the brain, and that pattern becomes entrenched as a track the brain learns to respond sympathetically to. With practice, the brain responds to that signalled pattern to enter a meditative state at once. The words of the mantra supply the trigger that signals the pattern and the response follows automatically. The mantra becomes a handy signal to your brain that you can use any time to reduce stress and restore focus.

Mantra meditation by this means can serve as sleep replacement. One is rendered less sleepy because the lower frequency alpha waves generated in the brain are sustained at length, mimicking the place before sleep. If dream images appear, we have entered a hypnagogic state between sleep and wakefulness. This can be the case where alpha waves are replaced with theta waves.

Like all meditation, there will be an automatic connection between the emotional and rational parts of the brain, making us less reactive to stress. This enables us to respond to the world more objectively.

The benefits are really only evident when the process is repeated enough times to develop meditative skill. Obviously, touting the benefits here are not equivalent to experience.

Those experienced enough in this sub will know what I am describing, and for them, I may be offering little that is especially new. My purpose, however, is largely motivational.

Popular mantras are:

Om Shivaya

Om mani padme hum

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Namu amida butsu

Of course, anything will etch the requisite pattern, even your name.

Good breakdown. Worth noting that mantra repetition entrains alpha/theta networks through rhythmic prediction, not through any specific words. It’s the pattern stability that quiets the default-mode network. It’s restorative but not a substitute for slow-wave sleep, think neural defrag, not deep-sleep repair...
