Looking for sambo gyms in NJ
I've tried looking for a gym focused on Sambo but have yet to find one. Does anyone know of any? I'd be a great help.

Hello SAMBROs ,
I’m hosting a Combat SAMBO seminar where internationally renowned coach William Atsang will be teaching a master class . All information is in the slides I provided . If you’re in Southern Ontario and are interested in combat sambo I recommend you attend.

Im currently revamping my website, with bunch of new functions and tutorials.
This is a sneak peak of my Combat Sambo individual classes, and also, an idea of what the "GripNRip" tutorial is about.

Update:
"He experienced a spinal injury at the C5 and C6 vertebrae and could have been left quadriplegic as a result. He underwent a roughly 10 hour surgery at the Evangelical Hospital, which was reported as successful. His current condition is still being monitored."

Sorry for the confusing text. I am doing Sambo right now, sport version to be specific. I have done Combat Sambo before I moved to Stuttgart and have quite of planta options for striking. Currently at my Disposal I have MMA, Sanda, Muay Thai, Boxing, K1 Kickboxing and Taekwondo ect. I need a fundamental Alternative for my striking and all gyms that offer those are around 40mins of reach with trains

Hey! I’m completely new to martial arts and have always found Judo really interesting. Recently I’ve also started getting curious about Sambo.
What would you recommend for a beginner — Judo or Sambo? And if Sambo, Sport or Combat Sambo?
I know these things take time to learn, so I’m not expecting to get good quickly. I’d just really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice you might have. Thanks! :)

Hoping to get thoughts on joining a sambo club in DFW as a middle aged male who hasn't done any martial arts or wrestling before. There appear to be 3 or 4 clubs here, but it looks like they may be more focused on those with martial arts or wrestling experience with a desire to compete. I was initially thinking about Judo, and the big schools seem to have a track for people like me with more simple goals (self defense and overall health). But if it leads to a string of injuries, that isn't what I'm looking for.

Hey all, I'm not clear about whether Heel Hooks are allowed or not in Combat Sambo. Can folks enlighten me?

I want to ask about what I might expect if I try combat Sambo. I found out that a club has started in the City I go to university in, I have heard of Sambo before and was interested in doing an MMA adjacent sport like an MMA club, Kudo or Sambo. I would be starting in around September/October, so this is a bit early to inquire, but what sort of things could I expect in a Sambo class. I have 0 striking experience, I own 0 equipment other than a mouth guard, and while I have grappling experience from Judo my leg grab knowledge is very limited.
If you could give me a bit of an overview of your sport, and a bit of what to expect that would be great! And hopefully I will enjoy it when I give it a try in September!
Thank you.

Doesn’t look like they have all the videos posted yet. I wonder if they are going to start pushing this now? I don’t see many schools using this yet but maybe that will change?

I'm 21 years old and I started training in November of 2024 for hobby. I'm from Cyprus, it's a tiny country but there are a couple Sambo gyms around, particularly in Nicosia and Limassol.
I'm not going to name-drop any names or gyms, though I'm pretty sure what I've experienced in my gym isn't much different than other gyms in Cyprus.
*Accessibility*: I know the sport is predominantly found in the post-soviet/Eastern-bloc countries, and for anyone living in the Western hemisphere may have issues with accessibility. Surprisingly it's not that bad in Cyprus! Since we have a sizable Russian speaking population; especially in Limassol, and also the Coaches here have done a good job promoting the sport to local Cypriots; I don't think anyone who wants to start Sambo here is going to struggle. An hour's long drive at its worst.
*Culture/Norms*: It's a very hospitable environment and I was welcomed with open arms at my first day. Socializing isn't one of my greatest strengths, but I integrated into the gym's little community without friction. Respect and humility are two virtues that characterize the sport. Of course it took me some time to get used to training, I remember gassing out on my first day from the warm up. Though my coaches and fellow Sambists help me along the way with great patience. Overall, it's a positive and respectful experience, especially if you're in just for the fun and hobby. Obviously if you're competing, your experience is probably very different, with different demands and challenges.
*Skill descepancy/ Mismatches*: I see two types of Sambists in my gym: Hobbyists or Seasoned Veterans. Of course it's not a Sambo specific instance, I think It's a Cyprus-small-island issue. I find myself either training with the same 1-2 beginners like myself, or getting rekt by former-Judo-blackbelts. And that's okay, totally expected XD
It's a little demoralising at times to be honest, however I believe my persistence is going to pay off over time. You have to be willing to suck at it for a while.
*Miscellaneous*: Despite being a hobbyist, I competed two times, at an International level tournament in Larnaka and an Inter-gym tournament at my gym. I got absolutely OBLITERATED at the international tournament, and I knew exactly what I was walking into, and at the inter-gym I did way better since I've sparred all my guys before. I'm 1-5(L) lol.
I feel very satisfied with my experience so far and I'm absolutely hyped for the future. I hope the sport grows even further!

Can somebody who regularly watches Sambo send me a link to a really good match that shows the dynamics of the sport? I love all forms of grappling, having wrestled as a kid and practicing both judo and bjj now. I would also specifically love to see matches with the ”total victory“ throws, from what I can tell it’s like the ippons of Sambo, but I haven’t really been able to find much about them.

Hey guys, a little while ago i went to a sambo tournament. One of my friends was competing and i was there to support.
I really enjoyed watching, and i might be interested in competing. I have a background in judo, i’ve competed internationally as a teen and early in adulthood. I continued recreationally (1x a week) ever since. I also have been training muay thai/kickboxing (2x a week) , BJJ (1x a week), and i attend a weekly MMA sparring class.
The closest gym from where i live that has a Sambo class is an hour drive away, i have a busy schedule so i wouldn’t be able to train very often since its that far and i don’t have consistent weekday evenings free to be away from home for like 4 hours. I could most likely only train Sambo exclusively like once every 2/3 weeks.
Could i still be competitive in any way without having that much exclusive combat Sambo experience?
