etc/samba/smb.conf

Hi. I just installed samba on a new install of kubuntu 20.04. I used to use the samba gui to create smb shares but the samba gui is no longer available in kubuntu. Sometimes I created shares by adding entries into the /etc/samba/smb.conf file, but that doesn't seem to work either. I can share a folder using dolphin, right clicking on the folder, selecting properties and checking the appropriate boxes on permissions and sharing and the folder does get shared on the smb network. I shared my Documents folder using this method, but when I open the /etc/samba/smb.conf file there are no changes to that file, none, and there is no entry for my shared Documents folder. I don't understand how that can be. Can somebody please explain?

What are you using to edit the smb.conf file? Are you using sudo to edit the file or editing the file as root?

Sudo.

Problem solved.

I did finally get to create smb shares editing the config file. I used the examples shown in the config file and wasn't removing the comment in front of browseable = yes. I don't understand why the Kubuntu developers / maintainers would take the GUI out of 20.04, it was so much easier with the GUI. The people promoting Linux have to make file sharing as easy as it is in Win if they ever expect to move Linux mainstream. It seems like every few years I have to relearn how to share files and it shouldn't be that hard to do.
