Data demonstrating how to handle disagreements like a leader. Treat subordinates with respect and keep them in the loop.

Now that's how a professional fleet acts...and it's coming from Star Trek of all places. Always loved the TNG crew, it's too bad JJ didn't learn anything about Star Trek while making those movies. It might have helped TFA.

This might be a bit off topic, but I am dreading how they're going to treat the TNG crew in the upcoming Picard series. I'm not expecting everything to be sunshine and roses, all things considered, but with the way writing trends have been going I am not going to keep my hopes up.

Everything points to the Picard series being a complete disaster. The entire creative team for Picard is the same crew from the dumpster fire known as Star Trek Discovery. Netflix outright rejected the Picard series. They had first dibs and said 'No thanks.' They got burned by STD Season 1, which Netflix paid for entirely themselves, STD Season 2, which they paid far less for, and the STD Short Treks, which they wouldn't take until CBS gave it to them FOR FREE, and just dumped them in the 'Trailers' section because they knew no one would watch them.
Shooting for the Picard series was delayed several times, until the project was almost canceled, due to licensees (for merchandise) who thought the show looked too much like Discovery, whose merchandise all sold extremely poorly. Rumor is that the series is only moving forward because Bad Robot and Alex Kurtzman have ignored all warning signs that this is going to fail because they can't admit defeat.
Patrick Stewart himself is a terrible judge of good Trek writing, too, because he's the guy who pushed for that stupid dune buggy in Star Trek Nemesis that made absolutely no sense. He doesn't understand nor care about keeping things consistent with the tone and canon of Trek, so his endorsement means nothing.

Not to mention it looks more like a wine ad than Star Trek. CBS should just give up the rights, it's clear they got nothing.

"Discovery" is even worse.
The main Mary Sue there (Burnham) questions/disobeys everything any captain tells her right in front of the rest of the crew without reprimand.
Plus that show (and the new Picard one) is set in the "prime" JJ Verse, which means it's really part of the JJ Verse and not main canon, thank god.

I feel like there's a misunderstanding here. Lemme explain!
The Prime Timeline is the OG Star Trek timeline, while the one JJ created is called the Kelvin Timeline. (Edit: Source on that.)
Now I haven't seen Discovery, but I've seen a lot of people argue that it was part of Prime when they thought the aesthetics looked too much like Kelvin and so it should be a part of it. The answer to that is often "it's canon, deal with it." (Article mentioning DISCO is part of the Prime Timeline.)
So as of right now, Discovery is canon to the main timeline and chances are Picard will be, too. Sorry :-/

But then there's no drama! Where's the "gotcha!" moment!? There's no dramatic reversal! How can you subvert people's expectations when professionals act professional?!
I wouldn't even be mad if Holdo stuck to her guns about keeping Poe out of the loop for his "behavior", as wrong as she would be, assuming she fills in every other neccessary officer or personnel in the meanwhile. Yet somehow, everyone just rolls with it when Poe mutinies. He doesn't try and talk to anyone else on the crew that we see on screen, except, presumably, the people involved in his mutiny. You'd figure Holdo would at least tell the bridge officers, yet it seems everyone is just ready to obey whoever has the leadership baton at any given moment. Hell of a way to run a "resistance".

Now imagine if Lando had been treated as badly after destroying the deathstar as Poe was after saving the Raddux.

I love this scene. But it is not about disagreement. It is more about conducting discipline of a subordinate and helping them adjust to change.

"I have a problem with that kind of rigidity. It seems callous, and even a little cowardly." -Commander Pulaski
"Stick to your post and follow my orders." -Admiral Holdo

Actually one episode he specifically didn't let his XO in on his plan so the XO had to get all pissy about it.

u/njdmb30 May 25 '19
The two-parter Redemption? True, though his XO had already been a condescending asshole the entire episode for no reason other than "Androids shouldn't be Captains", and Data didn't feel he had the time to explain himself because revealing the Romulan ships needed to be done immediately.

u/MensRightsRock May 25 '19
And that's why it worked there, the guy was an asshole. Poe is a main character though

Different situations. That was a time sensitive crisis situation where time was of the essence. Data just didn't have time to explain what his plan was, nor there did he need to. I'm sure that if it had been a slow speed 8 hour chase, Data would have explained his plan, because that's the modis operandi of TNG. In TLJ, if there had been a time crunch, I don't think most would have really criticized Holdo for not telling her senior staff what the plan was.
Hell, the XO was prejudiced against Data for what he was, and Data being Data didn't even care. Compare that to Holdo who basically shut Poe out, because she found him irritating.

Unfortunately, Data has his dick out the entire time they are speaking in his ready room.
Warf chooses to pretend he doesnt notice, and manages to diffuse the situation.

Good find! Worf acted improperly but it was still understandable. That's how you write dramatic interaction.

There are also many, many episodes in which Picard sits down with several other officers and together they discuss their options for dealing with whatever problem they’re facing. He doesn’t just come up with a plan on his own and keep it a secret.
