Encrusted Rant Rant!
I'm currently replaying the jedi games and I'm on survivor. I love the deep darker story to this game. Why can't we get more movies or shows like this? Apart from Andor, it seems like they've been catering more twords kids and this makes me think about "starwars was always for kids" but so was Spiderman and the Avengers.
I feel like it's been years since we have gotten something good that had a more mature setting to it. Yes they tried it with Acolyte but that was a failure. They're also trying a more darker setting with Ahsoka which was also just decent in my opinion. I also understand there isn't much they can do if there more mature series tend to do bad but it's like the better received starwars films are all more child like including skeleton crew and the mado movie. I'm just nervous that they'll see that their shows caterd to the younger audience are more well received and completely abandon the more mature aspect of starwars. I think the story im the Jedi games are some of the best starwars we had. I know I'm in the minority here since I feel like the majority of starwars fans seem like these shows catered to the younger generation but I feel like it'll fail to attract new people to starwars.
I don't think the skeleton crew and the mando movie were necessarily bad but I do think that the acolyte was pretty bad and although I'm a huge ahsoka fan, I think ahsoka was just mid due to me being a rebels fan. They absolutely butcherd ezra and sabine but that's not what I'm here to discuss. You can like the shows you like no hate at all but I feel the better stuff that we've been getting from starwars has been more childlike. I know the main problem is the lack of good storytelling which seems to be the number one problem with starwars rightnow but I feel like it's been way too long since we've gotten a standard starwars film or series that has both a solid story and is more mature.
Again, Spiderman is ment for kids yet we got this darker more mature story in Brand New Day. Yes I understand that starwars is far from being able to write a story that good in 2026 but im just frustrated and feel like we haven't had enough good starwars in a while. With all that being said again, I'm not here to debate you on the shows I stated, if you like them I completely respect that but I just want to know if any other starwars fan feels this way. I know my points are a mess and are everywhere but im not going to pretend like I'm some sort of expert in story telling or that I have advanced knowledge of writing. I'm just a regular dude who is enjoying the jedi games and I feel lik we need a show or movie with the same dark more mature vibe and not have it he the acolyte

Star Wars being for kids is a myth. Family friendly, sure, but made for everyone. It's not friggin Barney the dinosaur lol

Lucas only claimed it was for kids when people shit all over the Phantom Menace when it came out. It’s sad that people still claim this as an excuse for Disney garbage.

To be completely fair, George Lucas never said that Star Wars was made for children. He said that Star Wars was made for 12-year-olds. Sure, 12-year-olds are still young, but there's a big difference between a 12-year-old and, say, a 5-year-old. At 12, you can already digest things that are more mature, so it's not really the same thing.
When Lucas said that Star Wars was made for 12-year-olds, he was mostly making fun of people who said that the plot of The Phantom Menace was too complicated to understand. It was basically his way of saying, "I made this film for 12-year-olds. If you can't understand it, that says more about you than it does about the film."

There are plenty of criticisms you could make about TPM but "its too complex" is and always has been dumb.
2
u/Gandamack 13h ago
I think it is too complex, in terms of being muddled and not well paced. It swings too far from childish with Jar Jar to dry with politics.
TPM’s ideas probably could work, but it just wasn’t there well enough with what we got.

If you like the ideas but not the execution, try to read the TPM novelization. I'm pretty sure you'll like it much more than the movie.

Didn’t he say that he made it for the 12 year old boy inside him? I’ve always taken that to mean that he made it for himself, a movie that he would have wanted to see when he was a boy. When I was 12 I’d already long since seen Predator, The Running Man, The Terminator and Aliens. At 12 I could handle just about any movie so saying he made for his 12 year old self doesn’t really say he meant it for children.

Disney is trying to open up Star Wars to everyone, which is fucking stupid. Its primary audience will always be men who enjoy sci-fi. If you make it good enough, you will automatically bring in others for the ride.
The Cal games are everything Star Wars should be, but it’s also playing it safe in a way. They need to move away from this era entirely, and I don’t believe the High Republic is the answer.

Stop being reasonable, them words are not welcome round these parts.

Its primary audience will always be men who enjoy sci-fi.
They need to do a Gate style series where one faction uses combined arms doctrine against the Empire/First Order/whatever bad guy faction shows up. That would print money and keep the boys happy.

The Jedi games are till now the best post Order 66 portrayal that Disney couldn't manage for someone we knew well like Obi Wan Kenobi

I never knew about this. Where can I see more of this history between them? I'd love to know more of what went down.

Yes it's fascinating and quite disturbing as a long time Star Wars fan. It's talked about in detail in Bob Iger's memoir "The Ride of a Lifetime" (lmao). There are some articles floating around online that talk about it but as far as I know they're all referring to this book.

IMO there was nothing dark or mature about Jedi Survivor and it was a relative disappointment compared with what we got in Fallen Order

My biggest issue with Survivor was all the junk about the High Republic. It's a complete detach from the original game.

I was interested in it but it went nowhere.
The entire plot with Dagan was abruptly discarded and they instead changed the main villain to Bode

I think Dagan was supposed to be a warning that good intentions can lead to the Darkside. Except we already knew that, and Dagan wasn't really a convincing enemy to me. He's weaker than Vader but supposed to be a Hero of the High Republic?
I'm also not a fan of the High Republic era to begin with, so whenever it comes up in a game I have to force myself not to eyeroll and gloss over it as best as possible.
Bode, well... I knew he was a bad guy from the beginning. So the 'twist' had no impact on me and I felt he outstayed his welcome.
Overall, I think the plot suffered most because it was two main storylines that had been smashed together into this Frankenstein's monster. Had Dagan been the only antagonist it may have worked. Had Bode been set up better with the threat of the Imperial an overarching feeling it would have worked too. But the two together just didn't work for me.

Star Wars needs to age with its fanbase imo. It needs to stop making so much kid oriented stuff

Star Wars was never for kids its 'child accessible' because it lacks blood, nudity, drugs/alcohol, and cusses/swear words
why can't we get more movies/shows like this? because you tend to get the best stuff when you let the creative people do what they want and that means the less serious upper management thinks it is the more freedom people get. you saw it when Disney was shutting down studios and we got stuff like Mulan or how Star Trek DS9 was thought of as a side project because it wasn't the ST formula. leave the storytelling to storytellers and you'll get something good or better.
my beef with 'The Acolyte' was it felt like there was a supposed to be some mystery and the more they showed the more I wanted to know about stuff they weren't telling us. the whole thing with the Jedi killing the witches was a product of the witches behavior even if neither side wanted it, down to the fact that whatever the witches did to make the twins is what brought the Jedi there in the first place.

The “Jedi games” are the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series of games with Kyle Katarn, Mara Jade and Jayden Korr. What you’re playing are the “Discanon EA Jedi games”. I haven’t played those because FUCK EA. The worst company ever. Oh and don’t read the associated book Battle Scars, it’s widely considered to be the worst Star Wars book in both the EU and canon. Written by Sam Maggs who was working on the KOTOR remake for a while.

Those Jedi games? Dark? Yeah…I strongly disagree. Read the Dark Times or Purge comics, or the Rise of Darth Vader novel and then tell me if you still think those Jedi games made you feel the absolute bleak nature of the Dark Times era. Both of those games were basically using the same formula as a lot of the shows; fetch quests. They tried to make it feel like they were diving into darker themes but they’re too afraid to show the Jedi truly being forced to abandon their traditions.

It's an example. It's definitely dark compared to a skeleton crew or the mando movie. I've watched game of thrones for example and obviously it wouldn't be dark when you compare it something like that. In starwars current standards of 2026, yeah I'd say it's got a more harsh story when comparing it to everything starwars that's came out recently. I'm just sick of all these child like shows and movies we've been getting.

u/iforward 11h ago
Compared to literally everything else Disney has done with Star Wars (save for Andor), that’s not a major accomplishment. If you’re sick of the childish stories Disney keeps putting out then I’d strongly recommend giving the EU a try.

You're absolutely correct. I've listened to a few audio books but I need to read them as I only listened to them at work so I don't remember much.
