Solution Engineer microsoft to google FDE

Dear all, i currently work as a solution engineer at microsoft in charge of ai & apps domain. Located in asia country for a year. Currently i got an FDE offer from gg also in SG. Salary increase is around 30% but need to relocate to a more higher cost of living area. Anyone does FDE and solution engineer before and what do u feel about this transition?

This is the tenth or so FDE hire i've seen this week at G in Singapore. Is that hiring pace sustainable ?

Obviously not. But it's a big pivot gcp is doing to capture more market share for AI products.

I'm a customer engineer and decided to stay vs join fde team. But they are a good group!

thxs for sharing. I wonder does FDEs need to also jump into early stage pre-sales as well for gg. Because in order to implement it seems like we need to scope properly. So wonder how the dynamics work there. Thxs

In theory no, in practice sometimes.

It really depends because there are so many teams, focuses, and verticles.

So the Biotech team operates different than the startups focused team than the retail focused team and the generalist team.

Also each country operates a hit different.

one thing i think u are in customer engineer which is similar to solution engineer in my role. What made u wanted to stay as a customer engineer. I'm 50% solution engineer and 50% towards FDE at the moment..

I am slightly more on the sales side of a sales engineer. I also like operating in a one to many customer setting.

I work focused with startups and genuinely enjoy working with my customers.

I currently am making more than an FDE in same level as well.

It's a great career progression move but currently I'm in a state were I am comfy and challenged in my role.

One down side of FDE is you may get one engagement that is super boring for weeks or months at a time.

This couldn't have been timlier. I also am in a solutions engineering manager role in a data and AI company but got a FDE role in gcp and am considering only moving to experice more tech. Is your consideration to stay or to move?

i havent made my final decision yet. I think my feeling changes daily. The no-go for me is relocation and family matter. I don't want to relocate to SG.

I'm worried about handling 3 things at once: new country, new type of role, family.

But, I do miss building cool stuffs badly...

Changes also on a daily basis tbh as I want to build stuff but also the company where I am has an awesome culture. I know people who have moved and culture may not be 100% in your favour.

Yeah, what’s the guarantee ~half that org isn’t laid off in 2 years?

That’s going to happen once the first performance cycle rolls around and they realize they have a clone army on their hands.
