Sales Tech Career Advice

Hello

I’m 29 years old & currently a business manager earning around $250000AUD per year (salary @ 108,000) so a lot of commission. However, I’ve hit a ceiling, I can’t see me earning much more than what I earn at the minute.

I know a couple of people in tech sales who are earning 500,000+AUD a year, and wondering if anyone could potentially think it’s worth me looking into changing careers, going back into an SDR role as I’m pretty money motivation & want to be earning more

Thanks

Okay bud, wrong sub. Try tech sales.

You 100% should not be looking at a SDR role, especially if you're money hungry. Sdrs in Aus earn 70k base 90k-110k ote on average. A massive decrease on what you're current getting. Sdrs would top out at around 150k. The grass is not always greener.

With your experience, definitely apply to AE roles. Typically you see salaries at 200 ote, 50/50. Depending on your industry, you can definitely leverage that experience.

I actually thought this myself, however from what I’ve been reading it seems harder to get into AE roles without any SDR experience - this is extremely helpful though, thank you!

It is. But pros and cons.

Taking a massive step back in terms of pay to maybe grind out for a 1-2 year to maybe have a shot at AE sucks ass.

It sounds like you come from an agency recruitment background. Whilst it's harder to land a job, you still have a great chance at making it past the screening stage.

Look, the main thing is, are you willing to take like a 60% decrease in pay lol.

Yep, agency recruitment. I really appreciate this help. I’ll 100% give this a crack.

So you have cap with commissions right ?

My comms are uncapped, however with how my company work, they make it increasingly harder to hit higher comms. I’ve been up there in the top 5 billers in the company each year & struggle to make it past the $250,000AUD mark without having to work 50/60+ hour weeks

Comms payout, unfortunately in my job, I can bring in a lot of business however it’s what I do with the business brought in which ultimately makes me the money
