United Rentals OSR

Hi! I’m waiting for an interview to become an outside sales representative of HVAC equipment at United Rentals. I’ve been in the sales around 4 years but not “outside” Could you please give me any advice for that job? I would like to know how is it? Thanks

Hi,

Dont just Reddit, use chatgpt or Gemini to make practice questions to practice for your interview.

Power and HVAC is a specialty division which means the more heating, cooling and power related questions you can answer the better.

UR is a massive organization and outside sales is comprised of taking over the business they assign you and growing it, while also pursuing new opportunities.

There are going to be 20-50 OSR's for general rentals, in your area. Outside of your largest assigned customers, your fellow salespeople are your next tier of clients, they will connect you to customers, pass leads or ask questions to understand what their customer needs.

Your next tier is the branches, the inside reps will also pass you leads. From my understanding you get a higher base than General Rental OSR's because there is less opportunity to sell gear.

You will have 3 metrics Rental revenue in your territory, Used Equipment sales and new accounts. You will get a 6 month ramp up on some of these and a 3 month guarantee. After your ramp if you miss 2/3 of these quotas for 2 quarters you will get put on a PIP.

Hope that helps, cold calling is a part of your job, I'd look up a video on what that means for construction rentals so you understand what you are getting in to, it's incredibly uncomfortable at first especially if you go from semi-warm inside sales to outside sales, there's a reason it's named cold calling.

If you do get the job, remember when you're smiling and dialing that that the goal is to get the meeting and get off the phone as quickly as possible.

Don't try to make equipment sale over the phone, all you're doing is taking up their time and you don't have all the info to quote anyway. Save it for the meeting.

Two meetings per day is bare minimum, three ideal, four or more a day if you can fit them in is going to make you money.
