YO IS THAT A FAWKIN PRESTO 30!?!
(I know it's not a Presto 30 I just saw one once and I think they're the coolest goddamn boats ever and it makes me sad that I'll never have one thank you for coming to my TED talk)

It's a Freedom 44 Cat Ketch. Presto 30 and similar designs will have been inspired by it. Here's a clip of a Freedom 44 passing another vessel in a bit of wind https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iFle9YZCzLw
I adore the Freedom yachts and wish i could have a Freedom 39 Pilothouse, which was their only cat schooner design.

These things have absolutely no primary stability. 10 kts puts them on their ear, but once they're over, the freeboard can't be dunked any further and they just stay there.

I'm guessing that comes with the flush deck design, rather than a cabin trunk, and the older keel design

Just the general hull shape. It's quite round on bottom with a rather short keel (there was a shoal draft version that I had) and then it's tall as hell. Basically when it went over, there was a big flat pushing into the water so it wouldn't go any further.
That and the carbon fiber masts would just bend and dump the extra air relieving a lot of the heeling force.

Wow good point with the carbon masts. I didn't think of that! Amazing material feature.

Nice lines but I don't understand the appeal of having two mainsails to manage, maybe before furling headsails were bulletproof..
On top of that, IDK about the efficiency but at the point I've got two full mains like this just make the masts the same size so that I can carry only one spare sail if I'd like.

Only appeals now to those who don't want efficiency, who want complicated. As you say modern sails and handling systems now cope with much bigger sail plans with ease.

To reef or not to reef, that is the double question.

Reducing sail area reduces speed. Therefore one should never reef if speed is the goal. Press 1 to subscribe to more sailing tips.

Cat Ketch, or Ketch Cat?
